5 Best Desktop Pc Consumer Reports 2019 – Top Rated

These days, it’s not unusual for individuals or families to have more than one type of computer. If you’re looking to carry your computer to work or on vacation, you obviously need a laptop. And some have slimmed down to weigh as little as a couple of pounds.

If mobility isn’t a concern, get a desktop, because it’s very likely that you’ll get more performance for the same money—plus more flexibility in customizing the machine once you buy it. (That’s one reason lots of serious gamers have desktops.) Those are two major categories of computer, but there are several variations to consider—and we haven’t even mentioned the choice of operating system yet.

Choosing a Processor, an OS, and More

Speed matters. Processors with multiple cores can process more data simultaneously, with four cores now increasingly common on laptops. Our ratings say how many cores a laptop’s processor has.

Clock speed, measured in gigahertz (GHz), along with the number of cores and other factors, determines how quickly a processor can process information. Many processors can up the speed a bit for a brief time to yield maximum performance. Generally, within a processor family, the higher the clock speed, the faster the processor. Clock speeds typically start at around 1 GHz for a mobile processor. Speeds can exceed 5 GHz for a desktop processor.

Power Consumption
Another important factor when choosing a processor, especially for laptops: Lower power consumption equals longer battery life. If you’re looking for a very basic or budget computer to browse the web, email, and work on Office documents, basically every processor on the market should be sufficient. If you plan to watch high-resolution videos or play mainstream games, you should consider the Intel Core i5 and AMD’s Ryzen line of processors.

How Much Memory?
The more memory a computer has, the faster it is, up to a point. Memory is measured in gigabytes (GB). On both desktops and laptops, 8GB has become common, with 16GB found on higher-end devices. Unless you regularly have multiple large apps open at the same time, 8GB should be your target.

Operating System
Windows 10 brings a more uniform interface across a variety of devices: computers, tablets, Xbox consoles, and smartphones. In addition, “universal apps” developed for Windows 10 will look and work the same on a variety of devices. And far more games are available for Windows computers than for Macs.

Macs can be more expensive, but they’re less prone to most viruses and spyware (in part because there are more Windows PCs out there than Macs, making them a bigger target for hackers), and Apple’s support has been tops in our surveys. The company’s phone support is free for only 90 days, but you can get unlimited technical support through the Genius Bar at an Apple Store. The latest version of macOS (previously known as OS X) is called Mojave and was released in the fall of 2018.

Graphics Adapter and Graphics Memory
Also known as the video card, graphics processing unit (GPU), or graphics card, this hardware is responsible for drawing what you see on your screen. Graphics processing comes in two basic flavors: It can either be integrated into the same chip that’s running the rest of the computer or it can run on a discrete piece of equipment.

Most computers have integrated graphics. This has usually been the less expensive and lower-performing option—fine for most tasks but not for serious gaming. If you play mainstream and extreme games with all the visual effects turned on or if you edit video, especially HD and Ultra High Definition (4K), you need discrete graphics. Light video editing and gaming and all other typical computer tasks will do fine with integrated graphics.

All About Drives and the Battery

Solid-State Drives: SSDs are a different type of storage technology, letting your computer access data without the moving parts required by a traditional hard drive. They are also the single largest performance boost you can give a computer over an identical computer with a hard drive.

SSDs don’t have the spinning disk of a conventional hard drive, so they use less power, work more quietly, and should be more resistant to damage—and less likely to fail mechanically.  And because there are no moving parts, access to data should be quicker.

5 Best 50 Inch Lcd Tv Consumer Reports 2019 – Top Rated

The TV market has been changing a lot recently, both in terms of technology and price. New types of screens with organic light-emitting diode (OLED) panels and ultra-high definition (UHD, or 4K) is replacing the 1080p standard we’ve become used to. But which one should you buy? Here are the main points to consider when shopping for a new set, as well as the best TVs we’ve tested.

The Best 50 Inch Lcd TVs

The TV resolution question used to be between the options of 720p (1,280 by 720 resolution, or just under one million pixels) and 1080p (1,920 by 1,080, or just over two million pixels). Then it moved on to 1080p versus Ultra HD, or 4K (3,840 by 2,160, with eight million pixels). Now it’s no longer a question: 4K has become the standard for medium-sized and larger televisions from every major manufacturer.

The higher resolution no longer commands a huge premium, and you can now find a 65-inch 4K TV for under $1,000. Realistically, you’d be hard-pressed to find a TV from a major brand larger than 40 inches that aren’t 4K. In fact, every TV on this list is 4K.

You may also notice that there’s a newer TV technology, called OLED TV, that dominates our current TV ratings in the larger size categories. These sets are still pricier than LCD/LED models—though every year that price gap narrows—so you’ll need to decide if it’s worth splurging for a top-performing set. Also, every year top-performing LCD TVs get better, edging closer to OLED TV-like performance. Right now OLED TVs are available from only two brands, LG Electronics and now Sony, so you’ll have fewer choices than you will with LCD-based sets.

Screen Size

Perhaps the most important choice you’re going to make with a new TV is the size of the screen. TV screens are measured diagonally, and they range in size from fewer than 20 inches to more than 80 inches. However, not many people shop at the extremes. Televisions going into kitchens or small bedrooms might measure just 24 to 32 inches, but if you’re shopping for your primary TV, we recommend going bigger—say, a set with a 50- to 65-inch screen. You could consider an even bigger set for spacious family rooms or if you’ll be sitting very far from the TV.

While there are no hard-and-fast rules for determining the right size TV—personal preference, the field of view, and even visual acuity come into play—there are some general guidelines you can use. You can try one of the many online calculators that are available free or apply the following, easy-to-use, equation.

Choose Between HD and Ultra HD

These terms refer to the TV’s native resolution. A regular high-definition (HD) set is also a called a 1080p model because its screen resolution is 1920×1080. That means it has 1,920 pixels horizontally and 1,080 pixels vertically, so it contains roughly 2 million pixels in all. Think of pixels, short for “picture elements,” as the tiny individual dots that make up the TV’s picture.

Ultra-high definition (UHD) TVs, also called 4K TVs, have screen resolutions of 3840×2160, so they contain 8 million pixels or four times the number of individual pixels as an HD set. The more densely packed array of pixels in UHD sets makes them capable of greater picture detail. The benefits of a UHD TV are more apparent in larger screen sizes—say, 65 inches and above—or when you’d like to sit closer to the TV than you could with a 1080p set.

High Dynamic Range (HDR)

As we previously noted, perhaps the TV industry’s biggest buzzword is high dynamic range or HDR. When done right, HDR boosts a TV’s brightness, contrast, and color, making the pictures on the screen look more like real life.

As you can see in the dramatized image below, when HDR is at work, you’ll see details that might not otherwise be obvious, from the texture of the brick on a shady walkway to nuances in the white clouds in a daytime sky.

You’ll also see brighter, more realistic “specular highlights,” which are glints of light, such as the sun’s reflection off a car’s chrome bumper or an airplane wing. With HDR, those highlights pop; without it, they wouldn’t stand out against other bright objects. HDR does all that by increasing the contrast between the brightest whites and the darkest blacks a TV can produce. That’s where the “dynamic range” in the name comes from.

5 Best Glucose Meter Consumer Reports 2019 – Top Rated

Controlling your blood sugar, or blood glucose, the level is key to managing diabetes. Accurate test results help people with diabetes adjust their diet, exercise routine, and treatment plan—which might help prevent complications and reduce the risk of seizures, kidney disease, nerve damage, and blindness.

Anyone with diabetes can benefit from testing. Blood glucose monitoring can be important for those taking insulin or other diabetes medications, for women with gestational diabetes (diagnosed during pregnancy), and for people having difficulty controlling their diabetes.

For people with diabetes, it’s essential to get accurate and efficient readings of blood glucose levels. Glucometers allow people to do just that: quickly and easily measure their glucose levels themselves. We spent over 80 hours researching the 30 best glucometers on the market, considering specifications, features, user reviews, medical studies, availability, and cost. After eliminating models that used old technology or were too difficult to find in stores, we purchased the 10 best blood glucose meters so that we could perform hands-on evaluations of each device.

Before we dive into our recommendations for the best glucometers, it’s important to note that Dignified is not a substitute for your primary care physician. We make our recommendations based on common scenarios, hands-on experience, market cost evaluations and a comparison of important features, but they do not replace advice from your doctor. We are not medical experts.

Choosing a Blood Glucose Meter

All glucose monitors work in a similar way, but some have features and options that might better suit your particular needs. Talk with your doctor or diabetes educator about which model matches your monitoring requirements, lifestyle, and budget.

Cost
Don’t look at the retail price of the meters alone. What makes blood glucose monitoring expensive is the test strips, which you might use many times a day. At $18 to $184 per 100 test strips, the cost can add up to about $265 to $2,685 per year for people who test four times a day. Replacement lancets are another expense to consider.

Insurance
Medicare covers some diabetes-related supplies, and private insurance might cover some of the cost. See whether there are certain brands of meters and test strips that your insurance covers. Find out how many test strips, if any, are covered per month. Your strip coverage may depend, for example, on whether you use insulin.

Automatic Coding
Blood glucose meters need to be calibrated to each batch of test strips. Some require you to enter a code or download an app so that you can scan the codes with a smartphone. Entering this information incorrectly can result in inaccurate results. Other models use a removable code chip to calibrate the meter to each batch of strips.

Data Storage
The most convenient blood glucose meters store at least 360 test results. Some also track the average of your readings over seven, 14, or 30 days to give you a view of your overall blood sugar control. If you check your blood glucose frequently, consider buying a model with more memory.

Test Time
The difference of a few seconds might not seem like much, but when you’re using a meter three to five times a day, longer test time can be a nuisance. Our panelists found that 5 seconds or less was desirable.

Markers and Flags
These features allow you to note whether a reading was taken before or after a meal or exercise.

Unit Size
If you need to test while you’re on the go, look for a compact meter. Some larger models store multiple strips so that you don’t need to load one for each test, but our panelists found them to be bulky. Still, these models might make home testing more convenient, especially for people with dexterity or vision difficulties. Most models require a watch-style or medical battery, but consider getting a model that uses AAA batteries, which might be easier to replace.

Blood-Sample Size
Today’s blood glucose meters require smaller blood samples than those from years past. That makes testing less painful. If you’re sensitive to lancing, look for a meter that requires less than 1 microliter of blood.

How We Test Blood Glucose Meters

Our accuracy and repeatability tests of glucose monitoring systems are patterned after ISO standard 15197. That’s a set of guidelines from the International Organization for Standardization outlining requirements for the accuracy of blood glucose monitors used for self-testing by people with diabetes mellitus. Our ratings allow you to compare the accuracy of various models above and beyond current guidelines. All models we tested are well within current accuracy regulations, but only those with a Very Good or Excellent score earned our recommendation.

5 Best Bosch Dishwasher Consumer Reports 2019 – Top Rated

My family and I recently moved cross-country into a house that is still in the process of being remodeled. We have a barebones kitchen to work with. And, as I spend half an hour or so each day at the sink scrubbing away, there is no appliance I miss more than a trusty dishwasher.

When it comes to time savings, a dishwasher is well worth the investment. Our top pick is just a smidge over $800, but you can find decent models for half that price. When shopping for a dishwasher, there are a number of features that tend to lend themselves to better performance and durability. You should look for nylon-coated racks since they tend to have a longer lifespan. A soil sensor is also helpful because it will let your washer know when to end the cycle or if it should keep going.

Top 5 Bosch Dishwasher

Lab-Tested for Your Home

We test dishwashers year-round, spending 28 hours evaluating each one and identifying its features. Our testers load each dishwasher with 10 place settings of white ceramic dishes with baked-on food, then run it on the normal cycle (or its equivalent). When the cycle is complete, we record cycle time, and the amount of water and energy used. We use a photo-imaging machine to determine precisely how clean each dish is, we test how well each machine dries plastics, and panelists judge noise levels.

Dishwashers that perform well but don’t hold up over time aren’t winners. That’s why it’s important to consider our latest reliability and owner satisfaction survey findings. And to make it easier for you to choose the best dishwasher for your budget, we now incorporate lab-test results, predicted reliability, and owner satisfaction into one Overall Score for each model.

A Dish Load of Brands
There are more than 20 brands in our dishwasher ratings. You’ll see familiar names such as Amana, Frigidaire, GE, Kenmore, LG, Maytag, Samsung, and Whirlpool. Ikea is there, too—and no, you don’t have to assemble the dishwasher yourself. And our experts review the three B’s—Beko, Blomberg, and Bosch.

Manufacturers in the high-end price range include Bertazzoni, Dacor, Electrolux, Fisher & Paykel, GE Profile, Jenn-Air, Kenmore Elite, KitchenAid, Miele, Thermador, and Viking. We work to keep up with brands that you’ll see in stores and online. That’s why we also test models from Equator, Kuchta, and Thor Kitchen.

Name Your Price

The width and depth of a conventional dishwasher are intended for a cavity measuring 24×24 inches. But fitting your new dishwasher it could be a challenge if you’ve tiled the floor or redone your counters, changing the height of the cavity. So before you choose, measure your space and ask the retailer for the full height range (and don’t forget to account for adjustment of the leveling feet).

When shopping, take a close look at how the dishwasher’s interior is configured—the spacing of tines, and the placement of the silverware baskets and racks. You need a dishwasher that works for how you cook and eat.

Dishwashers for $500 or Less
Although they aren’t the top performers in our tests, you can still get a dishwasher that’s excellent at cleaning, and very good or even excellent at drying. Most dishwashers, including lower-priced models, now have a soil sensor. It adjusts the cycle’s time and water use to the load’s soil level, improving water efficiency. And some in this price range even has a stainless interior. So what’s the catch? The features are basic: Adjustable racks and stainless steel tubs are not a given, and most dishwashers in this price range are relatively noisy.

Dishwashers for $600 to $900
You can get a quieter machine, superb cleaning, and convenient features that might make it worth spending a bit more, such as adjustable racks and flexible flatware slots, along with a stainless tub, which tends to resist stains better than plastic. A soil sensor is a given.

Dishwashers for $1,000 or More
The styling changes and the dishwashers are fully loaded. You no longer have to choose between useful features. Innovative features—such as special wash zones for heavily soiled items, and WiFi connectivity—are added.

Dishwasher Drawers
They typically include two stacked drawers that you can use simultaneously or separately. But they’re expensive, and the models we tested haven’t performed as well overall as most conventional dishwashers.

5 Best Mini Fridge Consumer Reports 2019 – Top Rated

A drab college dorm room or a stark office will feel more like home with a snack or cold drink at your fingertips. Putting a compact refrigerator in a media room, man cave, or home workshop can also save trips to the kitchen. Add in prices as low as $95 and it’s easy to see why Americans buy a few million of these appliances each year.

But don’t expect the same temperature performance as a regular refrigerator. In Consumer Reports’ refrigerator tests, the Frigidaire FFPH44M4L[M] ($220), with a claimed capacity of 4.4 cubic feet, is the only one that performed well enough in both the refrigerator and freezer compartments to make our recommended list. That’s why the best uses for compact refrigerators are to keep sodas and other beverages cold and to provide temporary storage of snacks. If you plan to store milk, mayo, or other perishables long term, it’s important to use a refrigerator thermometer to make sure temperatures don’t exceed 40° F, the point at which harmful bacteria start to thrive.

How to choose a compact refrigerator

Generally speaking, buy the biggest compact refrigerator that fits your space. Larger models not only hold more but may also be more energy efficient and deliver the most conveniences. Here’s how to proceed:

Pick the type
Compact refrigerators come in three basic configurations:

Tall. These models are among the largest compact fridges and the most practical overall. Most of the ones we tested have about 4 cubic feet of claimed storage capacity. Because their thermostat is located in the refrigerator, temperature performance tends to be better in that section than in the freezer. Prices are $95 to $200.

Two-door. These models have a separate freezer with its own door, similar to a full-sized top-freezer. Their thermostats are located in the freezer, so temperature performance is much better in that section than in the refrigerator. Prices are $100 to $240.

Cube. Named for their cube shape, these models are basically bare-bones boxes with few conveniences and less than 2 cubic feet of space, offering the least value. Consider one only if nothing larger fits your space. Prices are $110 to $130.

Weigh the features
Some features matter more than others. Among those you should consider:

Interior layout. Shelves and door bins that you can raise, lower, or remove facilitate storage. Glass shelves contain spills better than wire shelves. A door-mounted dispenser holds a vertical stack of cans.

Locking door. You might not need one in your house, but you’ll welcome being able to thwart freeloading co-workers or roommates in an office or dorm.

Less-important features
Finish.
Compact refrigerators come in different colors and finishes, including black, white, faux stainless steel, and wood grain. Black is most popular, perhaps because it blends into many décors, and a stainless-look metallic finish is a close second.

Ice-cube tray. Even tall models often have just one. The tray produces miniature ice cubes, which melt quickly.

Interior light. It’s probably easy enough to find whatever you’re looking for in a compact refrigerator without one.

Before buying, check school rules

Sales of compact refrigerators spike sharply every August, an indication that many mini fridges are campus-bound. Although a lot of schools have no restrictions, there are some that ban refrigerators in dorms. Others provide a free compact refrigerator or microwave/refrigerator unit in every dorm room but prohibit all other models. Still, other colleges have capacity limits. So check with the campus housing authority or the college website before making a purchase.

How Much do Mini Fridges Cost?

Mini fridges vary substantially in price and can range from $70 to $300, and cost even more than that for deluxe models. The price is influenced primarily by the interior size you’re seeking, the quality and durability of the device, how flexible it is as far as reconfigurable shelving, and other factors.

What to Look for When Buying a Mini Fridge

Flexibility
Look for a compact fridge with a reversible door – that way, you have more options for where to put it. It’s also useful to get a fridge with adjustable, slide-in shelves, as they allow you to store large food items.

Energy Efficiency
Many top-notch mini fridges – including inexpensive models – are Energy Star certified and cost little to operate. Since most people leave fridges running all year round, the savings of an energy efficient model add up fast.

Good Freezer Space
Some mini fridges have no freezers. However, it’s nice to have some ice on hand for soft drinks, and it could be beneficial to have a few frozen microwave meals in your office or dorm mini-fridge. You often see small, box-type freezers in mini fridges, but the best option is a full-width freezer.

Buying Guide

Who Makes The Best Commercial Zero Turn Mower?

There are a lot of great lawn mowers on the market, but when it comes to investing in a commercial grade mower you want to make sure you’re investing your money wisely. In order to ensure this, you’ll need to take several things into consideration. The first, and perhaps most important thing you’ll want to do, is to consider the engine behind the product you’re thinking about investing in. How much power is it capable of putting out?

Are you able to find any other engine that can match or surpass the specifications of the mower that you’re looking at? The best engines on the market tend to be built by Kawasaki and Briggs & Stratton Vanguard. These two engine manufacturers are consistent in their impressive results with both power and efficiency. If you can find a ZTR mower with one of their engines, you’ll be making a good investment.

Commercial Zero Turn Mower Comparison Chart

When it comes to commercial grade mowers, you have a lot of options to turn to. There are a lot of great companies on the market that produce best quality zero turn mowers, but when it comes down to quality, performance, and price, three brands stand out from the rest.

Husqvarna

Husqvarna is one of the best brands for any homeowner to invest in. They have a wide variety of no turn mowers to work with and offer a lot of variety. The company has years of experience when it comes to crafting best quality machines and it shows the standard of excellence that comes with each mower they craft. They offer powerful and efficient machines that are able to make smooth transitions and operate fairly quietly compared to the industry standard.

Ariens

Ariens is a great company that offers a professional cut. They are a great company to go with if you can’t find a Husqvarna that fits your needs but try the Husqvarna YTA24V48. They offer the best quality machines that are best for getting work done quickly and efficiently. They also tend to work much more quietly than other brands, so if you live or work in neighborhoods that have noise restrictions this could be a great investment for you.

Poulan Pro

If you want a top quality commercial Zero turn that allows you to stay within a budget, this is a great brand to go with. You’ll be able to maintain all of the great benefits that come with having a commercial grade mower without having to pay the same price that you’d have to with brands like Husqvarna or Ariens. It’s a great compromise for anyone who needs a high powered machine to take care of their landscaping work.

What is a Zero Turn Mower?

Zero turn mowers serve as a great advancement in the lawn care industry. They allow homeowners to take care of their lawns in record time and without having to exert as much energy or effort. These mowers get their name from their ability to turn on a zero degree turn radius. This simply means that a ZTR can turn in a full circle without having to cover any extra ground.

The zero turn is a great investment for homeowners who don’t want to have to spend too much time taking care of their lawn but still want to make sure they get a good cut. You’ll be able to work the mower easily with a system of controls that requires minimum effort to operate.

How to Lift a Zero Turn Mower?

Zero turn mowers are great investments when it comes to lawn care, but servicing them could prove to be difficult if you don’t have the right equipment. These machines are heavy and could be damaged if you try to lift or turn them without the proper machinery.

The most efficient way to lift a zero turn machine is to use a maintenance lift or lift jack. These machines are specially designed to handle lifting larger machines like ZTR mowers.  They will allow you to easily access the bottom of your machine so you can sharpen your blades or otherwise care for your mower.

Do Zero Turn Mowers Have Brakes?

If you’re moving the machine forward or in reverse, all you have to do is push the levers back towards their neutral position to ensure that you’ll be able to slow down to a more comfortable speed or stop. If you wish to pause your work or park the mower, simply disengage the blades and turn on the parking brake. This will ensure that the machine won’t move until you’re ready to start working again.

Is Zero Turn Mower Worth It?

Many homeowners hate the process that comes with taking care of their lawns. It’s a tiring and tedious process that seems to never end. However, the creation of Zero turn lawn mowers has helped to make this task much more bearable. These mowers make it possible to complete a wider application of different tasks in a shorter amount of time. Even though homeowners have heard about all the amazing features and benefits zero turn lawn mowers have to offer, many of them aren’t certain about whether a ZTR machine would be a good investment for their family.

What’s Causing Those Skin Changes

Your skin is composed of several layers. Each one becomes thinner over time. All the layers contain collagen—the protein that provides structure, keeping skin thick and firm. With age and sun exposure, collagen production declines, often causing sagging, wrinkles, and slower healing. In fact, wounds may last up to four times longer in older adults than in younger people.

In addition to the forces of aging and the environment, several other factors can contribute to thinning skin. Menopause can make it more difficult for the skin to retain moisture, leaving it almost papery. Many common medications can also thin skin or cause it to bruise more easily, including oral steroids (such as prednisone), topical steroids (such as hydrocortisone), and some blood thinners (including aspirin).

Update Your Skin-Care Habits

“Taking proper care of your skin becomes even more important as you age,” says Shari Lipner, M.D., Ph.D., a dermatologist at Weill Cornell Medicine and NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital in New York City. “And that may mean changing some of your skin-care products and habits.” Forgo long, hot showers and baths; both can dry out and irritate the skin—especially during cold, dry weather. “Limit your showers and baths to 5 or 10 minutes in tepid—not hot—water,” Elmariah says.

You’ll also want to re-evaluate some of the products in your bathroom. Toss out any harsh scrubs, for instance. If you want to exfoliate the dead, dry skin, try rubbing a soft washcloth over wet skin, suggests David E. Bank, M.D., director of the Center for Dermatology, Cosmetic & Laser Surgery in Mount Kisco, N.Y.

Care for Wounds the Right Way

Thin, fragile skin is more prone to cuts and scrapes than healthy skin. But beware of adhesive bandages, which can irritate or cut the skin, Bank says. Look for labels that say “sensitive skin,” or cover the wound with a nonstick pan and use paper tape or an elastic wrap (like an Ace bandage) to keep it in place.

In people with diabetes, peripheral artery disease, and some other health issues, wounds can become chronic—generally defined as not healing within three months. Talk to your doctor if a cut is not healing normally.

At what age should you start incorporating an anti-aging cream into your skincare routine?

The best “anti-aging” product is sunblock, and that should be applied to the face daily as young as possible! In individuals with dry skin a daily moisturizer, serum, and eye cream should be started in the early 20s. If the individual has oily skin, traditional anti-aging products can start in their 30s, but most likely they will be using a retinol product to combat acne breakouts, so they are already using preventative measures.

Is it beneficial to use different formulas for morning and night?

Your skin doesn’t know what time it is, so the logic behind a day versus night regime is that the night regime doesn’t have to compete with makeup over the top of it and can be a thicker formula, while the daily regimen is typically lighter weight with less “corrective” properties.

What treatments do you recommend to treat wrinkles and other signs of aging?

Stimulating collagen production is key in combating signs of aging. For the novice, I like to start with micro needling, chemical peels, or IPL. These are all low downtime and usually affordable treatments done in a series of three to six sessions. For the individual that needs a more rigorous anti-aging treatment, I am a huge fan of laser resurfacing treatments such as Fraxel and Pixel Erbium laser. These treatments act on a deeper level and can correct texture, tone, and sun damage at a more aggressive level.

What Do Life Insurance Ratings Mean for Me?

These ratings are meant to give you an idea of how the biggest players in life insurance stack up next to one another. Even though life insurance is “out of sight, out of mind” for the most part, you want to be sure that you’re working with a reputable company in case the policy is ever needed.

That said, ratings should always be taken with a grain of salt. Remember that these scores are averages and don’t account for every individual agent, policy, or customer experience. For instance: A company with a seemingly low customer service score might actually have great agents at your local branch. A company with sub-par coverage ratings could still offer specialty coverage items that you’re looking for.

Use our life insurance ratings as a starting point, but be sure to do your own research, too. Start by clicking the providers accompanied by a “†” symbol for more information about coverage, service, and in-depth company comparisons. And if you’re not comfortable comparing policy options on your own, we recommend speaking with an independent agent. They represent multiple companies and can help you find the one that best fits your needs.

 Our Life Insurance Rating System

Our rating system incorporates scores from official agencies like the National Association of Insurance Commissioners, as well as consumer-based survey groups like J.D. Power. We’ve translated each company’s rating scale into a five-star system to make comparisons a little easier.

5 Best Personal Loans Consumer Reports 2019 – Top Rated

If you need money for any reason, a personal loan can help you get the cash you need. Personal loans offer financial flexibility because you can use them for just about anything as long as it’s legal or connected to higher education.

So, whether you’re looking to finance a home improvement project, solve some short-term cash flow problems, or consolidate high-interest debt, a personal loan can help you get there.

Most personal loans are unsecured, but some lenders also offer secured personal loans for people with bad credit. These loans typically require collateral, such as a car, to get approved.

Top 5 Personal Loans

Understand the true cost of a personal loan

When shopping around for personal loans, the interest rate isn’t the only thing you’ll pay on your loan. Also, look into the fees the lender charges, such as origination fees, late fees, and prepayment penalty fees.

Lenders are required to state these fees before you apply, so be sure to read the fine print.

“Average rates on personal loans can vary widely,” says Joe Toms, president of online lender FreedomPlus. “An individual’s credit score will heavily determine the rates.”

To give you an idea of what interest rate you’d qualify for, here’s an average range by credit score:

What to look for in a personal loan

When evaluating personal loans, it’s important to consider several factors to make sure you get the right one for you. Here’s a quick summary of what to think about:

  • Availability: Some lenders only operate in select states.
  • Flexible use: Some lenders require that you use the funds for the reason specified in the loan application.
  • APR: How does the APR you’re offered stack up against the competition? Most online lenders allow you to check your credit without affecting your credit score.
  • Minimal fees: How much is the origination fee? Do prepayment penalties apply?
  • Customer service: Is it difficult to reach a human in the customer service department? Can they answer all of your questions quickly and accurately?
  • Application process: Is the application process seamless? And how long does it take to get funding once the loan application is approved?
  • Reputation: Is the lender accredited by the Better Business Bureau? What are other customers saying?

Is it a good idea to get a personal loan?

Taking out a personal loan can be easy, but that doesn’t mean it’s the best decision for you. It’s important to consider both the benefits and drawbacks of personal loans before you apply.

WEIGH THE RISKS & BENEFITS

Here is a list of the benefits and the drawbacks to consider when applying for a personal loan.

PROS
  • Typically don’t require collateral
  • You’ll get the money in just a few days
  • You can use the cash for just about anything
  • You may get a lower interest rate than on a credit card
  • Offer set repayment terms
CONS
  • Some do require collateral
  • You may qualify for a higher interest rate than on a credit card
  • They can encourage you to borrow when you don’t need it
  • Typically charge higher interest rates than a home equity loan or HELOC
  • Don’t allow you to borrow more than once like with a personal line of credit

Shop around and save

To make sure you get the best deal, avoid taking the first offer you get. Instead, use SuperMoney’s loan engine to get offers from several personal loan companies at once. This will help you compare and contrast various personal loans in one place.

“It is important to find a lender that is right for you and your situation,” says Toms. “It’s much more than just a stated rate
offered,” Toms recommends asking if the lender is committed to evaluating your individual situation.

“Some will have a direct conversation with the consumer that allows the consumer to provide information and context about their credit scores and profiles, savings, and other factors that indicate they are financially responsible,” he adds.

Qualification

Regardless of whether you’re dealing with a loan matching service or a direct lender, all lenders will eventually require your social security number to do a credit check. Online matching services will sometimes initially do a soft pull, but when you are ultimately matched with a lender, there will be a hard pull. As we mentioned, personal loans are unsecured, so the risk is higher on the lender’s side. By checking your credit, a lender will be able to see how you’ve managed previous debt and get an indication of how you may manage a loan with them. The minimum credit score accepted is typically in the low 600s, but of course, this depends on the lender.

Cost of Loan

The most important factor that will influence the ultimate cost of a personal loan is the Annual Percentage Rate (APR). The APR is the interest rate charged for a whole year, including any fees or additional costs associated with the transaction. Generally, the lenders we evaluate will advertise an APR range. The better your credit score, the lower your APR will likely be since the lender’s risk is diminished. Also, most personal loan providers offer a fixed interest rate, meaning the APR will not change throughout the life of the loan, making it easier to plan repayments. At the outset of the loan, many lenders charge application and origination fees.

5 Best Drain Clog Remover Consumer Reports 2019 – Top Rated

Drains can get really dirty, and at times, even blocked. Both of these issues can be addressed with a good drain cleaner. This substance is able to absorb the contents causing the blockage and drain them away, restoring flow to your drainage system once more. Unfortunately, some drain cleaners are not very good at this.

Others will get the job done, but then end up ruining the drain construction material with the corrosive substances contained in them. And so, here are the best drain cleaners you can buy today if you want this important cleaning job done right the first time around.

However, it’s important that they’re used properly not just for safety reasons but also so they can do the job they were designed to do. With that in mind, we’ve put together a little guide which will help you to safely, and effectively, use drain cleaners to your benefit. So let’s go ahead and get started.

Using Drain Cleaners Safely & Effectively

Step One: Buy the Best Drain Cleaner

Before you can start remedying your slow drains and minor clogs, you need to purchase the best drain cleaner possible. While we’ve assembled a list of what we feel are the top ten products above, not everyone should buy the number one listed product on the list. Some people may need the product at the number one position, but other people may need a drain cleaner at the number six position. What I’m trying to say is that everyone’s needs are different, so you should choose the best product for you and your particular plumbing.

You should choose your drain cleaner according to what you need it to do. If you’re looking to remove buildup in a drain that contributes to it draining slowly, then you may want to purchase a foaming cleaner. However, while foaming cleaners are great for slow drain buildup, they absolutely should never be used in a drain that’s completely blocked.

Step Two: Learn What Not to Use It On

A common problem that people have with cleaners is that they try to use it in situations that it’s not appropriate to use it in. For example, these cleaners should never be used in toilets, tubs, garbage disposals or on other drains that the powerful acids contained in these products can damage.

And if you have a septic system, then you shouldn’t use these products at all. That’s because drain cleaners can kill the important bacteria that’s been breaking down your waste in your septic tank.

Step Three: Using the Product Safely

The first thing you do before you use any form of drain cleaner is to thoroughly read all of its instructions and safety precautions. These safety warnings and instructions must be followed above all else, even above anything that might be mentioned in this guide. Just following this piece of advice will greatly improve the safety and effectiveness of your cleaner.

Make sure that you assemble the proper equipment before you begin clearing your drain. Some of the things you’re going to need while using drain cleaner include the following items:

  • Safety Goggles
  • Thick Rubber Gloves
  • Face Mask or Respirator

 Step Four: Clean the Drain

Using Liquid Cleaner:

While holding the bottle firmly with one hand, open it with your opposite handle. Make sure that you don’t squeeze the bottle or tip it. Now, pour the amount indicated on the product’s label down the drain. When you’ve done that, you’ll need to wait anywhere from 30-minutes to 60-minutes, depending on what your product’s label indicates.

Using a Granulated Crystal Cleaner:

When using most granulated drain cleaners, the steps are a little bit different. As is the case with other cleaners, always follow the directions specific to your cleaner. Usually, when using this type of cleaner, you would remove all standing water from on the drain, or as much as you could, and then you would add approximately 2 to 3-tablespoons of cleaner crystals into it.

Preventing Clogged Drains

Now that you’ve cleared your drain, you might want to think about preventing your drains from getting clogged in the first place. Below are some tips which will help you keep your drains free of annoying clogs. That way, you can spend less time clearing them and more time doing the things you enjoy.

Don’t Pour Oil or Grease Down the Drain: It’s important that you stop pouring bacon grease, oil or other fats down your drain. These can build up inside the drain and cause clogs. Instead, pour them into an old coffee can, secure the lid and place the can in the trash. Or better yet, recycle your old oils.

Make Sure Drains Have Strainers: Another thing you can do is to make sure that all of your drains have strainers in them and that they are frequently cleaned out. If a drain doesn’t have a strainer, then consider buying one for it. There are some great new sink strainers on the market these days including the Tub Shroom, the Sink Shroom, as well as some nifty basket-type strainers.

Run Water Down the Drain: While you’re using the garbage disposal, make sure that you leave the water running until the food has been ground up. Also make sure that at least once a week you pour hot water down your drains to help dissolve soap solids, grease and other things that may be building up in your drain.
