Buying Guide

The demand for flat irons has increased tremendously in the last few years. With straight hair being the “cherry-on-top” of your “oh-so-perfect” outfit for the night, flat irons are not only bound to women now. Instead, men around us are also using them to style their hair the best way! Keeping in view the increased demand for flatirons, many of the renowned manufacturers have put in keen efforts to enhance the technology and come up with new features and added benefits every time.

1. Power and Heat

The very first feature that you need to look for in a flat iron is its power and heating ability. Similar to fabrics, like cotton and velvet requires a different amount of heat to be ironed perfectly. Similarly, different types of hair call for different heat consistency to turn them into a straight and sleek look.

Before adding one to your cart, consider your hair type and select the one with the suitable power and heating capability. Here is how you can do it!

  • If you have normal hair then 360-380F/180-190C would do good for you.
  • If you have bleached, damaged or fragile hair then you must opt for the one with below 360F/180C heating.
  • Lastly, if you have a thick and curly hair texture, you must consider flatirons with high heating capability i.e., 380-410F/190-210C.

Temperature Control

Best is to buy the one with the adjustable heat setting for easy usage on different heads with no damage at all. This is because people misinterpret that higher the temperature, the best would be the result. In real, daily exposure of high heat destroys the health of your hair in long-term. Still, in case if you are opting for the fixed temperature one instead of the adjustable one, try getting the one with a maximum of 450 degrees heating capacity. Markets are full of flatirons with 500 degrees fixed temperature setting. Trust me; these flat irons are only good for thick and curly hairs, and for other types of hairs they do nothing except burning!

2. Ceramic or Tourmaline

Ceramic and tourmaline are two different types of professional flat irons available in the market today. Ceramic flat irons are characterized by prompt heating and minimum damage. These flat irons have pure ceramic plates coated with a hard ceramic coating that prevents your hair from snagging.

On the other hand, tourmaline flat irons are ceramic & tourmaline infused. These flat irons are a bit expensive due to their prime feature of ejecting negative ions to cut down the frizzy texture of your hair and leave them smooth, shiny, and sleek.

One may opt between these two types of plates considering two factors:

  • Price; ceramic plate flat irons are cheaper as compared to the ones infused with tourmaline.
  • Type of hair; if you have very thick and curly hair, then ceramic irons will not do well for you. Tourmaline irons tend to be more suitable for stubborn hair as compared to the ceramic ones.

3. Plate Size

Flat irons have typically either narrow plates or wider plates. If you have short hair then narrow plates will be feasible to handle them. However, if you have long or thick hair, try picking the one with wider plates for easy straightening.

4. Weight

Weight is one of the most important yet the most over-looked feature while buying a flat iron. No offense, 1 pound, and 1.5 pounds don’t seem to stand far away, but trust me, when it comes to long hours of straightening, the 1.5 pounds flat irons are a pain in the neck!

The standard weight for flat irons is 1 and 1.5 pounds. If you have short hair, having a heavy 1.5 pounds flat iron will not be a big problem but in case, you have thick and long hair, it can do worse to your arms. Moreover, there are also flat irons as light as 10 ounces only, like the Solia professional ceramic. Best is to hunt for the ones weighing in ounces only!

5. Price

Price is the only constraining factor affecting the buying pattern of many consumers. Markets are stocked with a vast range of flat irons, ranging from very cheap to some of the very expensive ones. However, being low on cost doesn’t mean low on quality too. One can even find a good one within a strict budget.

With brief research of the market, it is best suggested to buy the one with price of around $75. This is an average price range for above-average flat irons. However, you are not restricted to buy a $200 one too!

How To Use a Flat Iron?

There are some key instructions that are meant to be followed to have the best out of your straightening chores.

  • First, always read the manufacturer’s instruction regarding all the basics of the product.
  • Try practice handling your new flat iron on your hair while it is cold.
  • Try using a silicone-based serum, anti-frizz spray or lotion on your damp hair before straightening to make the texture soft and silky.
  • Before ironing, Make sure your hair is completely dry until and unless you are using a wet-to-dry flat iron. Using a normal flat iron on your wet hair will burn them out ridiculously.
  • Divide your hair into sections of 2-3 inches for best result.
  • Glide your flat irons downward in a slow pace and avoid sticking on one place for more than 5 seconds. Otherwise, you will burn your hair.
  • Last but not the least; remember brushing your hair in the desired direction with a wide bristle brush while straightening.

5 Best Laundry Detergent Consumer Reports 2019 – Top Rated

Three manufacturers clean up in the detergent aisle, tallying up nearly three-quarters of the money consumers spend on getting laundry clean, according to IRI, a market research firm. Procter & Gamble leads the pack, and their lineup includes Tide, Cheer, and Gain. Henkel follows and is best known for Persil, while Church and Dwight sell Arm & Hammer and Xtra detergents.

Liquid detergents remain the most popular type, and while pods are convenient to use, eliminating the need to measure, even the best pods, also known as packs, can’t match the cleaning power of CR’s top-rated liquid detergents. Pods are typically more expensive per load, too. Powders? Sales have dissolved, and few brands are on store shelves.

The Trouble With Pods and Fabric Softeners

You won’t see any detergent pods or packs in CR’s ratings that make our recommended list. Why? CR does not recommend them at this time because of the risk they pose to young children and adults who are cognitively impaired.   These highly concentrated single-load detergent packets are convenient to use, but between 2013 and 2018, the American Association of Poison Control Centers received an estimated 69,425 calls related to liquid laundry packet detergent exposure in children under age 6.

Exposure can occur in several ways: ingesting or inhaling it, getting it in the eyes, or absorbing it through the skin. CR doesn’t recommend the use of these liquid detergent packets in homes where children under 6 years old may be present.

Did You Know?
As early as 2012 Consumer Reports called on manufacturers to make pods and packets safer. Since then, many responded by switching from clear to opaque plastic containers, and now packaging on all major brands have child-resistant latches or closures.  We’re also part of the committee that set a voluntary standard for the industry, which includes adding a bitter-tasting substance to the outer film of the detergent packets, and ensuring they’re tougher to burst when squeezed by young kids.

Fabric Softeners
Softener is added to some detergents, which claim to clean and soften clothing in a single step. A caveat: We have long advised against the use of liquid fabric softener on children’s sleepwear and on any clothes that have been treated with a fire retardant. It’s been shown to reduce flame resistance.

Why use a laundry detergent

By itself, water alone will not remove oil and grease from clothing because oil and grease repel water molecules. This is why we need to add laundry detergent. Laundry detergent contains surfactants, which help the water pull away dirt and grease, break it up, and wash it away. Surfactants do another job too. They hold soils and fabric dyes in suspension and prevent them from being re-deposited back onto the cleaned laundry.

Important features to consider

Cost-effective: Americans wash 300 to 390 loads of laundry a year on average. Switching from a premium-priced to a more inexpensive detergent can help you save $50 a year. If you live in a larger household with more laundry, the savings can be even greater.

Versatile: A laundry detergent that is effective in all temperatures gives you the option to wash your clothes in cold water without sacrificing cleanliness. Generally available at the same price point, detergents formulated to wash in cold water save energy, prevent shrinking and fading and keeps dark clothes from bleeding dye onto lighter items. Cold water detergents can also be used in warm and hot water, so you can change temperatures without needing to change detergents.

Sensitive skin: Dyes and fragrances can cause rashes and skin allergies in certain individuals. Dye- and perfume-free laundry detergents (which often have the phrase “free and clear” on the label) are the best to use if you have sensitive skin or baby laundry to do.

Eco-friendly: All chemicals are added to detergents for a specific purpose, but some companies position themselves as eco-friendly. They avoid chemicals that are categorized as potentially harmful to our health and environment by the Environmental Protection Agency and/or the Environmental Working Group.

Scent: A lingering scent on your clean clothes tends to be a love it or hate it an option. The best smelling laundry detergent for one person may be the worst or overpowering for another. When it comes to laundry detergent, you have lots of choices, from free and clear to heavily scented.

HE safe: If you have a front-loading washer or high-efficiency top-loader, you’ll want to use a detergent specifically labeled for high-efficiency (HE) machines.

How do laundry detergents work?

Laundry detergents are made up of surfactants and builders. We went into detail about types of stains and how to remove them on our laundry stain remover review. Here’s a quick chemistry lesson to explain how surfactants (short for “surface active agents”) are the most important part of any cleaning agent.

How We Rate Refrigerators

In our labs, each refrigerator we test gets wired up with temperature sensors. We then monitor them for more than a month in a temperature-controlled chamber to evaluate thermostat control and temperature uniformity. CR’s test engineers collect more than 5.4 million temperature readings for each model to detect warm and cold spots and determine which refrigerators will keep your food fresh longest. The results reveal that many refrigerators simply don’t do well at their primary task, and that could mean more wasted food and bigger grocery bills.

To test the freezer compartments of refrigerators, our engineers fill the appliances with boxes and boxes of frozen spinach, then evaluate how well they keep the packages frozen. In addition, we measure usable storage capacity, which rarely matches what manufacturers claim. Our engineers then use these measurements to calculate energy efficiency. Finally, we incorporate survey data collected from CR members to judge predicted reliability and owner satisfaction for each brand and refrigerator type.

Pick A Style

There’s a refrigerator configuration to suit every household. French-door models are exploding in popularity. Some consumers prefer the convenience of bottom freezers, which put fresh foods at eye level, but top freezers and side-by-sides can make more efficient use of space in a smaller kitchen. Here’s what you need to know to make the best choice. See our full refrigerator ratings for how models in the different sizes and styles below performed in our tests.

Consider Size

Most refrigerator configurations come in a range of sizes and capacities. Always measure where you plan to put the refrigerator before you shop. And check that it can fit through doorways. Allow room for the refrigerator’s doors to swing open, and for a one-inch clearance around sides and back for adequate airflow.

As for capacity, most manufacturers recommend 19 to 22 cubic feet for a family of four. But if you do a big weekly shopping trip or buy in bulk, you may need more—up to 30 to 33 cubic feet. Note: Our tests found that the amount of usable storage capacity was often less than the amount claimed. Check our refrigerator ratings for more.

Decode the EnergyGuide Label

Energy efficiency has become a big selling point with consumers. All new refrigerators are a lot more efficient than they were a decade ago, but here’s a look behind the label—to help you go as green as possible.

The EPA Energy Star rating is a good place to start when shopping; it means that a product is in or around the top 25 percent of the market, but efficiency varies by model (i.e. an unlabeled top-freezer might be more efficient than an Energy Star-approved French door model). Additionally, we test for energy consumption, which can add up to a $50-60 difference a year, more than $500 over the life of the unit.

How to Find the Right Refrigerator for You

Measure your space

Fridges vary by height, width, and depth, and it’s important to know exactly what size you need to be looking for. Too large, and you risk not being able to fit your new fridge through the kitchen door, let alone fit it inside your kitchen. Too small, and it might look out of place.

Depending on the amount of space available, you might find that certain types of refrigerators won’t work for your space. If you are working with a small space, your most likely option will be a top freezer. If there is only a narrow gap between your refrigerator and your kitchen island, however, a refrigerator with two doors will make it easier to reach in and grab the carton of milk without hitting the door on the cabinetry.

Consider your ideal depth size

After height and width, the most important measurement you’ll need to note is depth. Most fridges are not counter-depth; most counters are 26 inches or shallower, while most fridges stick out at least 2 or 3 inches beyond that. If you prefer your fridge to blend in with your counters, look for counter-depth refrigerators. These typically have less space to hold food but won’t stand out from the rest of your kitchen.

Determine your refrigerator type

After factoring in physical constraints, choose your fridge based on the features that are most important to you.

  • Top freezers are the most economical, but they don’t look particularly fancy and usually don’t come with ice or water dispensers in the door.
  • French door refrigerators look like they belong in Martha Stewart’s kitchen and typically have nicer glass shelving options and drawers. That said, they tend to be among the most expensive of the refrigerators.
  • Bottom freezers look fairly attractive, typically coming in stainless steel finishes, and are user-friendly. By tucking away frozen foods at the bottom, they keep your everyday food at eye and hand level. This can make it more difficult to dig up your frozen peas, however, though some models come with freezer baskets to help organize the space.
  • Side-by-side refrigerators usually take up more space in your kitchen than other styles, in exchange for giving you more freezer space than with any other type of refrigerator. The freezer space tends to be slightly narrow, making it difficult to fit in large pizza boxes.

9 Health Benefits of Infrared Saunas

Mentioned several times already in this article are references to the health benefits associated with Infrared Saunas. What are these health benefits after all? Well, let’s take a look.

Detoxification

Sweating is the most natural form of detoxifying your body. Infrared saunas help increase core body temperature which induces sweating and results in detoxification at a cellular level. Infrared saunas are proven to be seven times more effective in the detoxification process than traditional saunas.

Improves Blood Circulation

Infrared waves heat up core body temperate which also helps improve blood circulation in the body. Better blood circulation leads to faster muscle recovery and a decrease in both pain and inflammation. This is why saunas are often used by athletes after a contest and is a great natural way of fighting health issues related to poor blood circulation.

Helps with Weight Loss

A 30-minute infrared sauna session can burn about 600 calories which is a lot considering that all you do is sweat. The science behind it is simple as the infrared heaters increase your core body temperature it also increases your heart rate. This means that your body has to actively work harder in trying to lower core body temperature and heart rate, which in turns burns calories, helping in weight loss.

Healthier Glowing Skin

The infrared waves emitted by the infrared sauna greatly increase your body’s ability to produce collagen and elastin. Collagen is responsible for keeping your skin supple and glowing while elastin helps keep it wrinkle free. Apart from this, the improved blood circulation coupled with increased heart rate helps in the delivery of more nutrients and minerals to your skin.

Treating Lyme Disease

Infrared Saunas are ideal for individuals suffering from Lyme disease and are the most recommended form of treatment for recovery. The Far setting on an infrared sauna allows from a much more effective detox of the body as it helps eliminate toxins at a cellular level. It also eases the pain on affected areas and helps with the relaxation of tense muscles for Lyme patients.

Improving Immune Function

Regular sauna sessions are medically proven to increase white blood cell count in the bloodstream. White blood cells help protect your body from common illnesses and help in faster recovery. This, in turn, helps in building up immunity keeping you healthier and fitter.

Relaxation

Saunas have always been a great way to relax while still keeping your body active and stressed. The relief and rejuvenation actually happen when you step out of the sauna and come in contact with natural air temperature. Stress levels are reset, and you feel an immediate sense of relaxed freshness.

Cognitive Function Improvement

Infrared saunas also help in the regeneration of new brain cells thanks to the heat stress the waves put on the brain. The heat stress increases the production of prolactin; a hormone that helps in myelin growth in the brain. Myelin helps with the speed at which neurons enter and exit the brain and thus more myelin growth effective increases the speed at which your brain operates.

Pain Relief & Muscle Soreness

Infrared saunas help in pain relief as it improves blood circulation but it also helps with the pain associated with muscle and joint strain. Infrared waves heat up your body to a point where it starts producing proteins that repair and protect stress and strained areas of the body.

8 Things to Consider Before Purchasing an Infrared Sauna

Size & Capacity

When purchasing an infrared sauna the size and capacity play an important factor as most infrared saunas are built to fit only two to three people at a time.

Heater Material Used

The heater is the most important part of a sauna, and the material it is made from can be significant to the quality of heating that it would provide as well as the cost. A ceramic heater, for example, is more inexpensive than a carbon heater but provides an uneven distribution of heat.

The Build Material

Keeping a sauna insulated in order to retain as much heat as possible saves on both power and costs. Using material like cedar wood can help in retaining heat better which results in less power consumption and a more effective sauna session.

Size of the Heated Surface Area

Wider heating surface areas are much better conductors of heat than smaller heating surface areas. A well-measured sauna can heat up and cool down much faster with a well thought out the heating surface area.

Beware of Potential Toxins

Saunas can get really hot at times and can melt things like the glue that release harmful toxins into the air. Making sure that a sauna is well-built using high-quality materials negates the problem of having to worry about such toxic threats.

Heater Convers

These covers are the only thing protecting your skin from the actual heat source. Only use the best quality heat covers to ensure no accidents occur even during direct contact with the heat covers.

Safety

Ensuring that the manufacturer is well-reputable and has taken all measures to account for various safety hazards is essential in making a safe and reliable purchase. Companies that are ISO or CE Certified are a good indication that these manufacturers adhere to strict standards and regulations when building saunas.

Warranty

Understanding all the warranty terms and conditions before a purchase is possibly one of the most important things to consider that is often overlooked. When purchasing expensive luxury products such as saunas’ paying a little extra for an extended warranty or for better warranty terms is highly recommended.

5 Best Juicer Consumer Reports 2019 – Top Rated

Claims for juicers in infomercials and celebrity endorsements range from the ability of juice to ease muscle aches, alleviate high blood pressure, and even increase sexual potency. And ubiquitous juice cleanses are touted as a way to flush out toxins, make your skin glow, and slim you down for that big reunion or red carpet walk. Don’t believe the pulp fiction. The evidence says otherwise. Juice cannot be any better than the produce from which it’s made. It can even be less nutritious if much of the dietary fiber is removed in the process.

That said, a juicer can certainly add vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients to your daily diet. But only if you use it regularly and that’s not always easy. Some models we tested were so complicated to operate and so hard to clean that they’d probably end up collecting dust in a dark corner of your kitchen cabinet.

How We Chose the Best Juicers

Centrifugal vs. cold-press

We limited our focus to the two most common types — centrifugal and cold-press — excluding blenders, manual juicers, and citrus juicers. Centrifugal juicers shred produce and spin it rapidly to extract the juice.
Cold-press juicers (also called masticating juicers) crush the juice out by twisting the produce against a screen. Cold-press juicers take longer and tend to be more expensive, but extract slightly more juice.

Usability

Dietitian and nutrition writer Sharon Palmer told us that a juicer “should be easy to use, take apart, clean, and store.” Most of the juicers took about 10 minutes to assemble. The $300 Breville and the $400 Hurom both came mostly assembled, but the Tribes ($250) didn’t — and we found its instructions confusing and difficult to follow. KitchenAid’s $300 juicer attachment was hands-down the worst, requiring a full 20 minutes to assemble and almost causing injury thanks to its exposed blade.

Efficiency

Chef Liana Green told us that a good juicer can “juice green leafy vegetables and produce a high yield from ingredients.” The most efficient juicers will squeeze your fruits and veggies dry. The centrifugal juicers averaged a speedy two minutes per glass of juice, but they also tended to be quite messy, splattering juice everywhere if we placed our own glasses beneath the juice spouts. The cold-press juicers were generally quieter and neater during juicing, leaving us with a much cleaner countertop — but they required about seven minutes to fill one glass.

Ease of cleaning

While all juicers require scrubbing, we wanted to find the models that were as simple to clean as possible, free of nooks and crannies where pulp could collect. Despite a reputation that cold-press models will have you digging pulp out of their components for hours, our testing found that they were only slightly more difficult to clean than the centrifugal juicers.

Guide to Juicers

Assess your own health

Juicing isn’t for everyone. Registered dietitian Sylvia North warned us that “if you have a clinically diagnosed inflammatory bowel or kidney disease, some nutrients found in high concentrations in green juices may not be appropriate.” If you’re navigating any health challenges, it’s best to talk to your registered dietitian or doctor before you shop for a juicer.

Research recipes

Are you looking for a quick daily juice to take on your commute or something packed with all kinds of unusual ingredients to enjoy on a luxurious weekend morning? To make the most out of your juicer, get a head start by researching recipes involving your favorite ingredients. There are lots of online guides for beginners. The last thing you want to do is purchase a juicer and have it gather dust because you got sick of straight carrot juice.

Anticipate cleaning time

Be prepared to clean your juicer after every use. Bacteria love to feast on unpasteurized juices, so it’s important to clean your juicer every time you use it. And the sooner the better — the drier it gets, the harder pulp is to remove. During testing, we found that the strainer baskets and pulp spout tended to need the most attention. So think about how often you’ll use your machine, what kind of fruits and vegetables you’ll be juicing (some leave more behind in your juicer than others), and how much time you’ll have to clean your machine.

5 Best Suitcases Consumer Reports 2019 – Top Rated

If you travel frequently for work or for leisure, you probably understand the importance of having quality luggage. When traveling by plane, especially in the situation where you have to check your baggage, the luggage is not handled delicately. If you use luggage that is not made of durable materials it will often be damaged and can lead to a loss of your personal items. Sturdy luggage doesn’t have to be heavy. There are many lightweight luggage pieces that are made of durable materials and are designed to last, even through airport travel.

Solving the Case: Luggage Basics

Decide How You’ll Use It
Is it for flying, driving, cruising, or some other purpose? For airplane travel, familiarize yourself with the luggage rules of the airlines you plan to patronize. If it’s for road trips, look for bags that are pliable enough to maximize your trunk space. For cruise ships—which stack baggage in the boat’s belly before departure—flat, rigid luggage is optimal.

Consider How You’ll Store It
Once the luggage gets home, where will you put it? Hard-sided bags are the most unforgiving; you can’t squeeze them into a storage space. Soft-sided, structured bags have a little forgiveness on the front and back, but the footprint is fixed. If you have no place to store a stand-up suitcase, you may have to limit yourself to unstructured duffels or new collapsible bags.

Know Which Size You Need
This will depend mainly on the length of your trip and, if you are flying, airline luggage restrictions. It also depends on your own habits. Some people can pack for two weeks in their carry-on and an under seat personal item.

Soft-Sided or Ironsides?

Soft-sided luggage continues to dominate the market, but hard-sided is quickly gaining popularity because of newer lightweight materials.

Soft-Sided Luggage
Soft-sided luggage is made of fabrics that move and yield, usually a woven nylon fabric, such as Cordura or ballistic nylon. Ballistic is the shinier of the two and over time can abrade, but abrasions will not compromise the strength of the fabric. Cordura is a little softer and abrasion-resistant, preferable for an over-the-shoulder bag. If you consider a suitcase made of ripstop nylon, or “parachute material,” make sure that it is a high-denier (pronounced duh-NEER) fabric. Fabric denier is a measurement of weight, not quality.

Hard-Sided Luggage
Today’s hard-shell or hard-sided luggage is made with high-tech plastics such as ABS and polycarbonate, which are both lightweight and durable. ABS is the lightest, but polycarbonate is more durable. The most durable, but also the heaviest, is aluminum. Hard-sided luggage sometimes features a 50/50-split opening, allowing you to pack two sides equally and stabilize the contents with an X-strap or middle divider. Note: Because they close like a clamshell, you need double the surface space to open these. Most hard-sides are built this way, but some on the market have a top-lid opening.

Time to Upgrade? Some Shopping Tips.

Take a Tape Measure
Don’t pay attention to tags, labels, or promotions that proclaim “official carry-on luggage.” There’s no regulation that dictates carry-on size—airlines impose their own restrictions, and the limits can vary among airlines and even among aircraft. Know the rules of the airlines you plan to fly. Measure the dimensions yourself and make sure the measurements account for all parts, including outer pouches, wheels, and handles.

Hold That Handle
Check the wrist angle and the feel of the grip. For maximum durability, the handle should have little to no wiggling or rattling as you pull the bag. Also, check for smooth movement as you pull it up and retract it.

Wheel It Around
The wheels should roll smoothly and stay in place. Gently jiggle the wheels with your hands to make sure they are firmly attached.

Check the Interior Capacity
The outside measurements are important but don’t forget to consider how roomy the inside is. This can be difficult to do because many manufacturers do not disclose the interior volume. Look for the features that maximize interior space. These include:

• Squared edges: Interior volume is sacrificed with curved corners.
• Integrated outer compartments: Outside zip compartments should be on the same geometric plane as the main part of the bag—protrusions waste space.
• No wheels or handles: If you really need to make the most of every interior inch, forgo wheels and handles. They impinge on total packable space.

Check the Warranty
If you want your bag for the long haul, get the one with the best manufacturer’s warranty. A lifetime warranty to repair or replace the bag is, of course, the best option.

How to Choose An Inflatable Mattress

  • Types

One of the first things to consider related to this purchase is what type you are going to buy. Blow up mattresses have come a long way since they were all just a thin layer of air which kept your body (barely) off of the ground. Today, there are numerous models on the market, each with their own advantages and disadvantages. Deciding which type to purchase comes down to the intended use of the product, and the budget you have available for the purchase.

Many people are going to be looking for a raised mattress, as these are easier to get in and out of that one which sits low to the ground. Raised ones look quite similar to traditional mattresses once they are inflated, and they tend to be rather comfortable as well. Another option is a convertible air bed, which is one that can serve as a piece of furniture as well. This is great if you want somewhere comfortable to sit when you aren’t laying down to sleep. Self-inflatable ones have the pump built right into the product, which is a distinct advantage from a convenience standpoint. Finally, we have one with the frame and rails included that will act more like a permanent solution to your sleeping needs.

  • Comfort Level / Thickness

Generally speaking, the comfort level offered by a good air mattress is going to be directly related to the thickness. A thicker one will usually be more comfortable than a thinner option, as you are going to have more air underneath you throughout the night. It is common to lose some of their inflation overnight – especially if the night is cool – so starting out with a thick pad of air beneath your body is the best bet. With a thin mattress, it is possible to start the night somewhat comfortable, only to wake up with your body at least partially on the ground as it has deflated.

  • Size

Just like regular ones, inflatable beds are available in different sizes, generally ranging from Twin to King. Choosing the right size is an important consideration and one that largely depends on your needs. Twin and Full sized beds tend to be an excellent choice for outdoor users. Unless you have a family, there’s no reason you’re going to want a big bed when it’s going under in a tent.

The most common is the Queen size. It’s big enough to sleep two full adults but smaller than a King; it won’t take up your entire living room, or spare bedroom. Manufacturers make Queen sized more than any other, which gives the consumer many options to choose from. Don’t worry as our top picks are listed in this buyer’s guide.

  • Pump / Ease of Use

Inflating can be a difficult chore – or it can be quick and easy. A pump is incredibly convenient to have for these situations. Surprisingly, some models still require the use of a hand or foot pump, which demands that you put in some sweat and effort before you can lay down for the night.

On the other hand, other mattresses come with inflating units that run electrically. Either through the use of batteries or by plugging the unit in, these make inflating your bed no problem at all.

  • Air Holding Ability

Naturally, this is a critical point (read more about the study). You don’t have to think about how well your spring mattress is going to hold up over the night, but you do need to concern yourself with this feature when it is only air between you and the ground.

While there isn’t much that you can do about cool temperatures, you can pick out one that is going to hold on to as much air as possible. If it has a leak or two, and you combine that problem with weather conditions, you will suddenly find yourself laying on the ground. Shop for quality products which have been well-built and designed to prevent leaks whenever possible.

  • Warranty / Customer Service

It is a nice bonus to buy one that comes with warranty protection of some kind. Or, at least, you should consider buying from a company which has a good reputation for reliable customer services. If something goes wrong, you don’t want to be all on your own to get it fixed and back to working order.

  • Price

It should go without saying that you are going to want to consider price along with all of the other points carefully. You are going to have to pay around a couple of hundred dollars to purchase one of the more quality options. Or, you can opt for the inexpensive route, which will keep your cost way down but will also limit the comfort and features that you enjoy.

5 Best Hot Dogs Consumer Reports 2019 – Top Rated

The Department of Agriculture requires that they are made from real meat (beef, chicken, pork, turkey, or some combination of those), and they can’t contain more than 3.5 percent of nonmeat binders or fillers (which include nonfat dry milk, cereal, or dried whole milk).

But even the hot dogs marketed as “healthy” can still be nutritional landmines—high in sodium, fat, and nitrates. “Summer cookouts, picnics, and trips to the ballpark often mean hot dogs are on the menu, and indulging once in a while is okay,” says Ellen Klosz, a Consumer Reports nutritionist. “But make sure they’re only an occasional treat, and limit your consumption to just one.”

Consider What’s Inside

When it comes to the quality of the meat they contain, not all hot dogs are created equal. Some, such as Oscar Mayer Classic Wieners and Ball Park Classic Franks, include what’s called “mechanically separated meat” (pork or poultry), which the USDA defines as “a paste-like and batter-like meat product produced by forcing bones, with attached edible meat, under high pressure through a sieve or similar device to separate the bone from the edible meat tissue.”

The USDA says that mechanically separated meat is safe (however, mechanically separated beef is not allowed because of concerns about mad cow disease). But the European Food Safety Authority notes that the way this meat is processed increases the chance of microbial growth. “If hot dogs are properly cooked, I wouldn’t be concerned about bacterial growth,” says James E. Rogers, Ph.D., director of food safety at CR. See below for cooking safety tips.

If you prefer to avoid mechanically separated meat, check the ingredients list on your hot dog package—if it contains mechanically separated meat, the manufacturers are required to say so.   You may also want to opt for brands that are made with grass-fed beef (such as Applegate Naturals Beef Hot Dog) or organic hot dogs, which are made with meat from animals that have been raised without antibiotics.

Factor In What Else You Eat

No matter how healthy your hot dog may sound, it is still a processed meat product. The World Health Organization defines processed meat as “meat that has been transformed through salting, curing, fermentation, smoking, or other processes to enhance flavor or improve preservation.” In addition to hot dogs, processed meats include bacon, beef jerky, deli meats, ham, salami, and sausage.

Processed meat has been shown to cause a number of negative health effects. A review of 20 studies including more than a million people, published in the journal Circulation in 2010, found a consistent link between processed meat intake and an increased risk of coronary heart disease. In fact, the researchers concluded that each daily serving of processed meat (a hot dog counts as one serving) was associated with a 42 percent higher risk of coronary heart disease.

Don’t Be Swayed by ‘No Nitrite’ Claims

By USDA regulations, if a hot dog label says “cured,” it was made using synthetic nitrites or nitrates (such as sodium nitrite)—preservatives found in many processed types of meat. Curing is a process used to preserve meat, add flavor, and maintain color. However, nitrites and nitrates may form cancer-causing compounds called nitrosamines in the body. The same regulations require that hot dogs that don’t contain synthetic nitrites be labeled “uncured.” (Those labeled “organic” are also required to be free of synthetic nitrates or nitrites.)

If a product makes a “no nitrite or nitrate added” claim, check the fine print. The USDA requires that products making this claim include a line that says “except for those occurring naturally in” whatever naturally-occurring source the company used.

Keep an Eye on the Extras

Few people choose to eat their hot dogs naked, and how you dress them can either improve or worsen their nutrition profile. “Typical hot dog buns are made from refined white flour that has very little fiber or nutritional value,” says Kate Patton, R.D., a dietitian at the Cleveland Clinic. “Plus, they often contain added sodium and sugar.” Whenever possible, opt for a 100 percent whole-grain bun instead.

As for toppings, a little ketchup or mustard won’t hurt. But be sure to read the ingredients list and check the Nutrition Facts label for sodium and sugars content. Both can have around 160 mg per tablespoon. And ketchup and some mustards, such as honey mustard, can also contain added sugars. For example, a tablespoon of Heinz Tomato Ketchup has 4 grams of sugars, while a tablespoon of Gulden’s Honey Mustard has 6 grams—a hefty amount, considering that the American Heart Association recommends that women have just 24 grams of added sugars a day; men, 36.

Cook and Serve Safely

Be extra careful when serving hot dogs to children. Whole dogs or ones cut into circular slices, are a major choking hazard for children younger than 4 years old, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics. The safest ways to serve hot dogs to young children is to cut them lengthwise and then into small pieces. If the hot dog has a casing, be sure to remove it before cutting into pieces; the casing can also cause choking.

5 Best Wine Refrigerators Consumer Reports 2019 – Top Rated

Wine coolers aren’t for storing wine forever. They’re forgetting it ready to drink. We talked to four wine experts, tested fridge temperatures, and drank our fair share of chilled rosés, all to find a good looking wine cooler with buttons that worked, could accommodate temperatures from 45–65 degrees and didn’t develop freezer burn.

How We Found the Best Wine Cooler

Good temperature range

First, we made sure our fridges could keep both whites and reds at the optimum temperatures for serving, based on recommendations from Wine Spectator:

  • Light dry whites, rosés, and sparkling wines: 40 to 50 degrees
  • Full-bodied whites and fruity reds: 50 to 60 degrees
  • Full-bodied reds and ports: 60 to 65 degrees

We cut any cooler without that full range of 45 to 65 degrees Fahrenheit.

Adjustable shelves

If shelves can’t be adjusted, you are limited in the number, size, and shapes of the bottles you can store — not ideal for anyone with a varied collection, let alone an upcoming dinner party. With removable shelves, you can fit more bottles by stacking them like firewood, plus have the option of storing opened bottles standing up.

Energy efficiency

The amount of energy a wine cooler uses depends on how many hours per day the fan or motor is running, plus variables such as how often you open the door and the ambient temperature of the room. It’s measured in kilowatt hours per year (kWh/year). In general, manufacturers are not actually required to list energy consumption for wine coolers as they are considered luxury items. However, some manufacturers do estimate the energy consumption of their coolers; 15 of our contenders used 400 kWh/year or less.

Hands-on usability

As we whittled down the contenders, we got our hands on six wine coolers. From there, we tested things like the controls, shelving, door mechanism, etc. We played around with them all, pushing buttons and pulling out drawers, then tested each unit to find the accuracy of their temperature settings at 49 and 64 degrees Fahrenheit and how easily they could accommodate wine bottles of different sizes.

How to Find the Right Wine Cooler for You

Ask yourself what kind of wine you prefer

If you lean heavily to just reds or just whites, a single-zone cooler will work great. If you prefer to mix it up, choose a dual-zone model. But don’t forget: all wines can be kept at 55 degrees until a few hours before being served when you can pop them in the fridge to cool down or leave them out at room temperature to warm up. If you’re looking more for a short-term storage option (as opposed to a ready-and-waiting-to-be-consumed solution) a single-zone cooler with a limited temperature range could still be a great choice.

Assess room temperature

Thermoelectric models, while more efficient, struggle in anything but ideal temperatures. If you live in Florida and plan on keeping your wine cooler in an un-air-conditioned garage, a compressor model will definitely be the way to go.

Determine where you want the wine cooler

Most freestanding coolers don’t have a front vent, so they need several inches of breathing room around the back, top, and sides so they don’t overheat. For a more streamlined look, go with a built-in model that matches your appliances or cabinetry. Also, consider your space: Do you want a tall-skinny guy? A cube? Something else?

Are wine coolers reliable?

Experts warn that smaller free-standing units can be fickle. Matthew Goldfarb says that many smaller, off-the-shelf units only work well for a few years, and that larger, built-in models have more structural integrity. “I’ve had mixed success with the smaller freestanding coolers,” agrees Erik Liedholm, wine director for several of chef John Howie’s restaurants. The wine coolers we tested all had one-year warranties (except the Jenn-Air, which had a two-year warranty), but Goldfarb emphasizes that if you have invested in a quality wine collection, it’s worth it to invest in a quality cooler or cellar.

Will a wine cooler match my decor?

Wine coolers come in all finishes: wood, stainless steel, sleek black. They come in all sorts of shapes too: tall and skinny, small like a microwave, as giant as a dishwasher, and even the size of a full room. This is an appliance that’s going to be sitting on your countertop or taking up some floor space in your kitchen. Luckily, there are a variety of aesthetics to choose from.

5 Best Shower Head Consumer Reports 2019 – Top Rated

Tired of a shower that produces a weak sprinkle instead of an invigorating stream? Get a new showerhead. The best models we tested provide a strong flow and steady temperature, and some have adjustable settings for spray patterns ranging from a gentle mist to a forceful message.

The Environmental Protection Agency estimates that showers account for nearly 1.2 trillion gallons each year—about one-sixth of all the water used in U.S. residences for bathing. Before 1994, showerheads typically had a flow rate of 5½ gallons per minute. Since then, the Department of Energy has limited showerheads to 2½ gpm to conserve not only water but fuel for the water heater. Models that display a WaterSense label use no more than 2 ppm.

What We Found

The good news is that the best showerheads we tested provided a pleasing flow while meeting the federal flow-rate standard. But the challenge for manufacturers is to meet the standard and even the voluntary WaterSense requirements without affecting the feel of the shower since an anemic flow can result in longer showers and even greater water use.

Water-Efficient Models can Satisfy
Our male and female test panelists evaluated the force of each model’s stream, the various settings, ease of adjustment, and other factors. Supplementing those subjective judgments were lab measurements of changes in flow rate and water temperature at various settings.

Not surprisingly, how well our panelists liked a showerhead often coincided with how much water is delivered. Most water-saving models achieved only middling scores. But our testers described one inexpensive water-saving model as “refreshing” and “stimulating,” despite its modest 2-GPM flow rate.

Don’t Go by Price
If you think you have to spend top dollar to get a strong performer, think again. Our top-rated multi-setting showerhead costs a quarter of the price of the model that finished second. And among single-setting showerheads, the least-expensive model we tested was the clear winner.

Are You Using Too Much Water?
If you‘re wondering whether a new showerhead can reduce your water consumption, here’s a quick way to measure your old model’s flow rate: Place a bucket marked in gallon increments under the showerhead, turn on the shower at the water pressure you normally use, and time how long it takes to fill the bucket to the 1-gallon mark. If it’s less than 24 seconds, you could save water with a low-flow showerhead.

Consider Installation
Replacing most showerheads is a simple do-it-yourself project. Unscrew the old head with an adjustable wrench and remove the old plumber’s tape from the threaded part of the shower arm. Then apply fresh plumber’s tape over the threads for a good seal, and screw the new showerhead tightly in place. But some multijet “shower towers” require expensive plumbing alterations.

Types

Even the simplest and least-expensive showerheads can provide a satisfying shower, but more money may provide more options. Here are the types of showerheads to consider.

Multi-setting Models
These showerheads let you adjust the flow pattern to as many as 12 settings such as mist, massage, pulsing, wide and narrow stream, and a water-saving trickle while you soap up. Some offer a continuously variable setting. Multiple settings generally met with our panelists’ favor, but the mist setting on some models didn’t impress.

Single-Setting Models
These simple showerheads provide only one set, as their name implies. They tend to cost much less than multi-setting models.

Shower Towers
Three multi-head models we tested promised a spa-like experience and comprised a fixed or handheld showerhead (or both), and several additional body jets, all mounted on a vertical strip. But more recent action by the Department of Energy has changed how these products work. Initially, shower towers got around the federal 2½-gpm standard by limiting each head or spray to 2½ gpm. Thus, if the unit had four outlets, it could legally use as much as 10 gpm.

Features

The individual taste should determine which features you choose. Here are the showerhead features to consider.

Aerating Showerheads
By mixing air with water, these showerheads form a misty spray to make the flow feel more substantial. Laminar-flow showerheads form individual streams of water instead. On the models we tested, aeration cooled the water from 5 to 15 degrees F on its way from the showerhead to where it would hit your back. Laminar-flow showerheads may cost a little more, but they save energy by maintaining the water temperature better. And they don’t create as much steam and moisture, a plus especially if you live in a humid region.

Handheld Showerheads
You can leave a handheld model in its holder or remove it to focus the spray on any part of your body. A rubber hose provides mobility.

Rain Showers
With their large head and wide spray pattern to reduce pressure, they promise a soft, soothing flow, like raindrops falling on your head.
