Important Features to Look For

When buying a pressing table, you need to analyze several models and see which one comes with everything you need for hassle-free ironing. To make sure you will not regret your choice, look for the following features next time you want to buy a board for your iron.

  • Adjustable height

If you want to stand comfortably while ironing, make sure your table can be adjusted to match your height. This way, you will prevent back pain from standing leaned over it and you will comfortably maneuver the iron.

  • Feet lock

Most boards come with collapsible feet and although these are helpful when storing it, they can be a real pain if they happen to collapse while you iron. Therefore, look for a table with a feet lock which prevents accidental collapsing.

  • Wide surface

A good model must provide enough room for both small and large garments especially if you want to iron sheets or towels. As such, do not think that a more compact unit will be more convenient because you might realize you needed some extra space.

  • Sleeve accessory

Pressing shirts is a woman’s worst nightmare because the sleeves are very hard to maneuver. Thankfully, the sleeve accessory can help you remove wrinkles without creating more while handling the shirt so you might want to consider getting it.

  • Rubber rest

Usually, the rest is made of metal that can get hot from the hot plate of the iron so you could get burned if you accidentally touch it. Therefore, make sure your table of choice has rubber or silicone pads which absorb heat.

  • Cover

In time, the cover can wear out and the padding can become flat, which could make the garments wrinkled when getting into contact with the frame. To avoid this situation, you can always purchase a new cover with thick padding so your clothes will remain neat after pressing. The cover is available in multiple sizes and designs and you can also find one for the sleeve accessory.

Why Use a Board?

If you do not have one at home already, you probably must be thinking why is it a must pressing on a special surface and not just any type of table. To convince you that you should start using it, here are a few of the main advantages brought by them.

  • Comfort

Without any doubts, you will feel more comfortable because it provides the perfect conditions for standing. Most models are height-adjustable so you will always be able to set it correctly so that you will not experience back, neck or feet pain in case you have a big stack of laundry to press.

  • Convenience

Another excellent thing about it is that it’s so easy to set and use. The legs are locking so there is no risk of it collapsing mid-process and it provides a wide surface where you can stretch all your laundry. Plus, you will have the iron within reach in the special holder and you can even hang hangers to store the pressed garments until they are ready to hit the closet.

  • Perfect results

Thanks to the large surface and the thick padding on top, the garments will come out perfectly smooth, without any wrinkles that might appear every time you have to twist and turn them. If you were to use a regular table, the hard surface would leave marks on the clothes and you would not be able to fit the sleeves of a shirt or the legs of a pair of pants.

  • Cleanliness

A special table for pressing provides a clean place where you can care for all your garments. You will have a restricted area where you will only handle the garments so no accidents or stains can appear, like it could if you were ironing on the dining table, for instance. You can complete your laundry room with it and you will find it extremely useful.

Accessories that Come in Handy

There are quite a few accessories that, if they don’t come with the board as you buy it, it’s advisable to purchase them separately for a more convenient, productive, and efficient de-wrinkling of the clothes. Considering that ironing the clothes is one of the chores that, let’s face it, no one is mad about, it’s important to either look into a model that comes with as many of them as possible or buy them separately. Here is the list of accessories that shouldn’t miss from your arsenal for a smooth ironing process:

  • Sleeve attachment: It is designed to connect with the board in order to allow an easier, more convenient ironing of the sleeves of shirts and blouses.
  • Over the door hooks: These hooks are meant to be installed over the door so that you can hang the board when you are not using it and save space in the dresser by doing so.
  • Cord holder: As the name suggests, it holds the cord of the iron so that it is out of your way when you press the clothes to remove the wrinkles.
  • Cleaning cloth: This accessory is intended for use on the iron more than on the board, with it cleaning any residue from the soleplate.

5 Best External Hard Drive Consumer Reports 2019 – Top Rated

An external hard drive works to expand three main functions of your computer. As opposed to an internal hard drive that is built into the computer, the external is bought separately to enhance what your computer can already do. A good drive works by allowing you more storage space, the ability to back up your data and to share this data with other computers. That’s why it is essential if you’re switching computers, as the external hard drive allows you to save this data and transport it to the new device. There are countless external hard drives to choose from, and which works best for you really depends on what you need to do, and what computer you already have.

It’s a Great Time to Go for a Drive

In an era when Apple charges 99 cents per month for 50GB of iCloud storage and Google offers 100GB of free storage for two years with the purchase of a new Chromebook, mainstream external hard drives might appear less essential than they once were. But modern external drives are faster, more stylish, and often more durable than their counterparts from a few years ago. They’re ever cheaper and more capacious, too. For about $50, you can add a terabyte of extra storage to your laptop or desktop by just plugging in a USB cable.

The Need for Speed: Hard Drive or SSD?

Solid-state drives (SSD) have fewer moving parts than a traditional hard drive, and they offer the speediest access to your data. Unlike a conventional disk-based hard drive, which stores data on a spinning platter or platters accessed by a moving magnetic head, an SSD uses a collection of flash cells—similar to the ones that make up a computer’s RAM—to save data. (For an in-depth look at exactly how this cell-based storage works, check out this tech explainer from sister site ExtremeTech.)

Physical Size Matters: Desktop or Portable Drive?

If you have a large photo or video collection—perhaps you are a photo or video editor, or maybe a movie buff—you’ll likely need several terabytes of space in which to store it. So your best option is a desktop-class drive. We define these as having one or more spinning-platter drives inside and requiring its own dedicated power cable. Of course, in this scenario, your files are going to have to stay at your desk.

Need Redundancy or Extreme Speed? Consider a RAID

If you buy a larger desktop drive with two or more spinning platters, you’ll almost certainly have the ability to configure the drive as a RAID array using the included software. Depending on which RAID level you choose, you can prioritize capacity, speed, or data redundancy, or some combination thereof.

A collection of spinning drives configured with a RAID level designed for faster access can approximate the speeds of an SSD, while you should consider a drive with support for RAID levels 1, 5, or 10 if you’re storing really important data that you can’t afford to lose. Hit the link above for an explanation of the strengths of each RAID level.

Major Considerations before Purchase

There are a number of technical facts that can be considered when deciding on which external hard drive to buy. For the average person, there are basically five major considerations.

1) The Size of the Hard Drive or Hard Drive Capacity

This is the amount of space available for storage on the disk. A rule of thumb is to choose a hard drive about twice as large as the size of your computer’s internal hard drive. This will allow you to always have the available space for two backups of your computer if it needs to be restored. For other purposes such as external storage of working copies, your workload requirements will determine the size. It is always better to have too much external hard disk capacity than not enough because the latter would require you to purchase another hard drive.

2) The Data Transfer Rate

This is a technical number that basically tells you how fast the data will be transferred between the computer and the external hard drive. Slow data transfer rates are not always bad if you are in no hurry to copy or backup your data files. Users who need quick storage and retrieval times need to pay close attention to the data transfer rate.

3) The Type of Cable

The cable used to connect the computer to the external hard drive. Usually, the cable will come in the box with the hard drive. More importantly, check if the cable provided will support the maximum data transfer rate (above) of the device.

4) The Interface Between the Computer and External Hard Drive

This will be a cable, and the cable needs a connector on both ends. Your choice of the connector will directly affect your data transfer rate The main types of connectors are USB, Firewire, Thunderbolt, and eSATA. For most people, USB and Firewire are the most common choices since most computers have connectors already built into the unit. There are two versions of USB, 2.0 and 3.0, with 3.0 having a data transfer rate about twice that of 2.0.

5) Price

This last consideration often ends up being the deal breaker. The external hard drives with the fastest data transfer rates and the greatest disk capacity are almost always the most expensive. Even if you do not have a requirement for terabytes of data storage, you may require the fastest data transfer speed. With the price, there is also the consideration of manufacturer and brand name, as some people are particular about buying from certain manufacturers.

Which Is the Best TV to Buy?

Ultra HD Blu-ray discs are a relatively new physical media format similar to Blu-ray discs. Don’t expect to play them on your current Blu-ray player, though; you need a dedicated Ultra HD Blu-ray player or a Microsoft Xbox One S to handle the format. The good news is that it stores 4K video with HDR (explained below), and even can handle advanced surround sound audio if your speaker system supports it. Since it’s a physical media format, you don’t need to worry about your internet connection to be sure you’re getting 4K, either.

Should I Wait for 8K?

No.

8K is 7,680 by 4,320 resolution or four times the number of pixels of 4K. For the last few years major TV manufacturers have been showing off big-screen 8K TVs as proof-of-concept models, but they haven’t become much more than that. Currently, there are no 8K TVs available to buy in North America, and there aren’t any on the horizon. According to the HDMI Forum, only 400,000 8K screens will ship in 2018, and they’ll almost entirely ship in China. Even by 2020, that number will only hit 900,000 worldwide, of which only a fraction will be in North America.

High Dynamic Range (HDR)

While 4K is now established as a no-brainer, there’s a new next-step video technology to consider when shopping for a TV. High dynamic range (HDR) content gives much more information to the display than a standard video signal. The resolution remains the same as UHD, but the range of color and amount of light each pixel can produce is significantly broader.

Thanks to new LCD and OLED panel technology, high-end televisions can display wider color gamuts and finer gradients of light and dark than before. Standard video was built around the limitations of older televisions, intentionally using a set range of color and light information in the signal. HDR breaks those limitations and uses expanded ranges with finer values between them. Basically, this means HDR displays can produce more colors and more shades of gray (or, rather, luminance values) than standard dynamic range displays.

Shopping for Sales

Most TV manufacturers unveil their new models for the coming year at CES in January. This doesn’t necessarily mean the prices for the current models will drop quickly, though. New TVs don’t usually hit shelves until spring, so you’re looking at a solid three or four months where you know what new TVs are coming out. If you can find deep discounts for the previous year’s models in January, and you know they’re good performers based on our reviews, you should go for them.

Are Cheap TVs Worth the Price?

Budget-priced TVs can be very appealing, especially if you haven’t yet made the jump to 4K and are daunted by $1,000-plus price tags. Be careful when you see a great deal on a TV, though, even if it says 4K HDR. It could be a steal, or it could be a disappointment.

Performance among budget TVs varies wildly, and trends toward the mediocre. You’ll find a few very good deals, like the TCL P-series that manages to combine excellent picture quality with a low price. You’ll also find a sea of cheap TVs that don’t measure up.

What’s the Difference Between OLED and LED?

Plasma TVs were the only flat-panel models available when they were first introduced more than a decade ago. They’re now a dead category, and you won’t see a major television manufacturer offering a new plasma television any time soon. That means your choices will mostly consist of LED-backlit LCD TVs (also simply called LED TVs), as well as much less common, much more expensive OLED displays.

What Screen Size Should I Get?

A big TV that’s too close can be just as uncomfortable to watch as a small one that’s too far away, so don’t assume that the biggest screen available is the best choice. There are a few different rules of thumb regarding TV screen size based on your distance from it. Generally, the distance of your couch to your TV should be between 1.2 and 1.6 times the diagonal measurement of your screen. So if your couch is six feet away from your screen, you can comfortably watch a TV between 42 and 60 inches. If your couch is five feet away, a 37- to 52-inch screen should work well.

TV Refresh Rate and Contrast Ratio

Refresh (or response) rate, the speed at which your TV’s panel refreshes its image, is expressed in hertz (60Hz, 120Hz, 240Hz, 480Hz, or 600Hz). The theory is that a faster refresh rate results in a smoother image. But in reality, there are several reasons this simply isn’t true, and it’s not worth paying more for a set with a faster response rate. In many cases, 60Hz will do just fine for films and 120Hz will be plenty for video games and sports (though you should probably turn off those higher refresh rate modes when watching most shows and movies, or else you’ll get that jarring soap opera effect).

Smart TV Apps and Services

Almost all TVs now offer web apps and built-in Wi-Fi. These features let you connect your television to the internet and access online services like Amazon, Netflix, Hulu, Sling TV, and YouTube. Many also integrate social network services like Facebook and Twitter, and many manufacturers offer entire downloadable app ecosystems with other programs and games you can use on your TV. Some manufacturers like Samsung and LG develop their own connected platforms for their smart TVs, while others like Insignia, Sony, and TCL use third-party systems like Amazon Fire TV, Android TV, and Roku TV to give their TVs apps and online services.

Getting the Right Connections

Your ideal TV should provide enough video connections not only for now but for the foreseeable future as well. The most important input is HDMI, which supports all major forms of digital video sources including Blu-ray players, game consoles, set-top boxes, cameras, camcorders, phones, tablets, and PCs through a single cable. Most TVs have three or four HDMI ports, but some might only have two.

5 Best Washer Dryer Consumer Reports 2019 – Top Rated

Washers sell for around $275 to $2,500, depending on the type, capacity, and features. And while doing laundry may be a mundane task, the washer aisle is anything but boring. You’ll see multitasking machines that allow you to wash two loads at once, all-in-one front loaders that go straight into dryer mode, pod-dispensing front-loaders, built-in pretreat features, and more.

Buying a matching washer-and-dryer set remains popular. The coordinated styling makes a statement, but not all couples make a great pair. “The Best Matching Washers and Dryers” highlights the best from our tests. Want to save money? Read “Laundry Products That Waste Loads of Money.”

How do a combination washer and dryer work?

You can use a washer-dryer combo just like you would a normal washing machine. Once the wash cycle has finished, you can then use your combo to get your clothes dry. You also have the option of setting your machine to wash and then dry your clothes all in the one cycle, so you can wake up in the morning to find that your clothes are clean, dry, and ready to be put away.

Washer dryer combos incorporate a condenser dryer – which is different from a vented dryer in that it won’t pump humid air into your laundry space. Instead, condenser dryers work by extracting moisture from your clothes and then draining it away as condensed water. Most washer dryer combos include a drainage hose which will automatically drain this water down the sink. There will also usually be a lint filter which will need to be emptied periodically.

What are the benefits of a washer-dryer combo?

A combination washer-dryer is a great idea if you need to save space. By combining a front-load washing machine and condenser dryer in one compact unit, it takes up half the total space and removes the need for buying two separate appliances.

Washer dryer combos also share all the advantages of front load washing machines – they’re water and energy efficient, and they deliver excellent wash results. Unlike a top loading washing machine, you could potentially incorporate one of these machines beneath a kitchen bench – which is especially useful if you don’t have a dedicated laundry space.

Other benefits of a combination washer-dryer include:

  • Wash & dry cycle
  • Most washer-dryer combos are able to wash and dry a load of washing in a single cycle. Aside from saving you considerable time and effort, you can also take advantage of off-peak energy prices by running the machine overnight and waking up to a fresh load of laundry. As the dryer capacity is always less than that of the wash, however, this does mean that your wash & dry load can only be as much as the dryer capacity.

  • Programs for any lifestyle
  • Washer-dryer combos feature a great range of everyday cycles to suit any lifestyle, including quick wash, delicates, wash & dry, wool, and many more.

  • Super convenient all year round
  • A combination washer-dryer is ready to use no matter the weather – rain, hail or shine – thanks to its condenser dryer.

Please note that the washing capacity will always be larger than the drying capacity. This means if you want to run a full wash and dry cycle, you should only half-fill the drum. This gives the clothes space to move, making the dryer safer and more efficient.

Will it fit inside my laundry?

  • Carefully measure the space where your new washer will be positioned
  • Take into consideration the space required for the door to open
  • Measure the width of the doors/corridors leading into your laundry

You may have found the best clothes dryer in the universe, but if you can’t get it into your laundry, it’s of no use to you. All dryers are different – therefore you always need to measure before you buy.

How long will it take to dry a load?

The length of time it takes to dry a load will depend on the weight of the damp clothes. The heavier and wetter the fabric, the longer the drying cycle will take. The size and efficiency of your dryer are two features which will affect cycle times – but generally speaking, the more room inside the drum, the faster your washing will dry. On average, the average wash and dry cycle will be in the vicinity of 2.5 – 3 hours.

When is a washer dryer combo NOT suitable?

If you have a large family and you tend to use your dryer a lot, a washer dryer combo would not be suitable. Many families like to save time by washing a second load while the first load is in the dryer -something you simply can’t do with a washer dryer combo. Additionally, these machines are not able to handle large drying loads, which is no good if you want to dry large volumes of towels and linen at a time.

Combos work best with relatively small loads. For best results, you will need to pull about half of the damp washing out of the drum when the wash cycle finishes before starting the drying program (this is because the drying capacity is generally half the wash capacity). Therefore, washer dryer combos are excellent for small households of around 1-3 people, and for apartment living.

Buying Guide

The demand for flat irons has increased tremendously in the last few years. With straight hair being the “cherry-on-top” of your “oh-so-perfect” outfit for the night, flat irons are not only bound to women now. Instead, men around us are also using them to style their hair the best way! Keeping in view the increased demand for flatirons, many of the renowned manufacturers have put in keen efforts to enhance the technology and come up with new features and added benefits every time.

1. Power and Heat

The very first feature that you need to look for in a flat iron is its power and heating ability. Similar to fabrics, like cotton and velvet requires a different amount of heat to be ironed perfectly. Similarly, different types of hair call for different heat consistency to turn them into a straight and sleek look.

Before adding one to your cart, consider your hair type and select the one with the suitable power and heating capability. Here is how you can do it!

  • If you have normal hair then 360-380F/180-190C would do good for you.
  • If you have bleached, damaged or fragile hair then you must opt for the one with below 360F/180C heating.
  • Lastly, if you have a thick and curly hair texture, you must consider flatirons with high heating capability i.e., 380-410F/190-210C.

Temperature Control

Best is to buy the one with the adjustable heat setting for easy usage on different heads with no damage at all. This is because people misinterpret that higher the temperature, the best would be the result. In real, daily exposure of high heat destroys the health of your hair in long-term. Still, in case if you are opting for the fixed temperature one instead of the adjustable one, try getting the one with a maximum of 450 degrees heating capacity. Markets are full of flatirons with 500 degrees fixed temperature setting. Trust me; these flat irons are only good for thick and curly hairs, and for other types of hairs they do nothing except burning!

2. Ceramic or Tourmaline

Ceramic and tourmaline are two different types of professional flat irons available in the market today. Ceramic flat irons are characterized by prompt heating and minimum damage. These flat irons have pure ceramic plates coated with a hard ceramic coating that prevents your hair from snagging.

On the other hand, tourmaline flat irons are ceramic & tourmaline infused. These flat irons are a bit expensive due to their prime feature of ejecting negative ions to cut down the frizzy texture of your hair and leave them smooth, shiny, and sleek.

One may opt between these two types of plates considering two factors:

  • Price; ceramic plate flat irons are cheaper as compared to the ones infused with tourmaline.
  • Type of hair; if you have very thick and curly hair, then ceramic irons will not do well for you. Tourmaline irons tend to be more suitable for stubborn hair as compared to the ceramic ones.

3. Plate Size

Flat irons have typically either narrow plates or wider plates. If you have short hair then narrow plates will be feasible to handle them. However, if you have long or thick hair, try picking the one with wider plates for easy straightening.

4. Weight

Weight is one of the most important yet the most over-looked feature while buying a flat iron. No offense, 1 pound, and 1.5 pounds don’t seem to stand far away, but trust me, when it comes to long hours of straightening, the 1.5 pounds flat irons are a pain in the neck!

The standard weight for flat irons is 1 and 1.5 pounds. If you have short hair, having a heavy 1.5 pounds flat iron will not be a big problem but in case, you have thick and long hair, it can do worse to your arms. Moreover, there are also flat irons as light as 10 ounces only, like the Solia professional ceramic. Best is to hunt for the ones weighing in ounces only!

5. Price

Price is the only constraining factor affecting the buying pattern of many consumers. Markets are stocked with a vast range of flat irons, ranging from very cheap to some of the very expensive ones. However, being low on cost doesn’t mean low on quality too. One can even find a good one within a strict budget.

With brief research of the market, it is best suggested to buy the one with price of around $75. This is an average price range for above-average flat irons. However, you are not restricted to buy a $200 one too!

How To Use a Flat Iron?

There are some key instructions that are meant to be followed to have the best out of your straightening chores.

  • First, always read the manufacturer’s instruction regarding all the basics of the product.
  • Try practice handling your new flat iron on your hair while it is cold.
  • Try using a silicone-based serum, anti-frizz spray or lotion on your damp hair before straightening to make the texture soft and silky.
  • Before ironing, Make sure your hair is completely dry until and unless you are using a wet-to-dry flat iron. Using a normal flat iron on your wet hair will burn them out ridiculously.
  • Divide your hair into sections of 2-3 inches for best result.
  • Glide your flat irons downward in a slow pace and avoid sticking on one place for more than 5 seconds. Otherwise, you will burn your hair.
  • Last but not the least; remember brushing your hair in the desired direction with a wide bristle brush while straightening.

Know Your Inkjets

Is an inkjet in your future? You can find the technology in a huge variety of single-function printers and all-in-ones designed to fill a wide variety of roles at home or at the office. Here, we’ll explore the different types of inkjets, and highlight some key features to look for when shopping for one.

The so-called near-dedicated photo printers are widely used by professional photographers, artists looking to output high-end work, and amateur photo enthusiasts alike. There are even inkjets designed for mobile printing, complete with batteries. Most home inkjets are meant for personal printing or, at most, shared models for outputting a few pages per day. They tend to be compact, and the vast majority of them are small enough to share a desk with.

Graphics and Text Quality

You can count on almost any inkjet to print graphics good enough for both internal business use (like printing PowerPoint handouts) and home tasks (like producing party invitations). If you choose carefully, you can have output quality that would please a graphic artist.

The Achilles’ heel for inkjets is text quality. Ink tends to bleed into plain paper, which makes it difficult to print text with the fully professional look you’d want for documents like a résumé or a business proposal. Not surprisingly, inkjets meant for the office generally do better on this score than home-oriented models, but we have yet to see an inkjet that prints text with the crisp, clean edges and smear-proof ink you’d get from any laser printer. Worse, most inks will smear if you spill something on them or try using a highlighter.

Photo Printing

Nearly any current inkjet can print photos that at least match the quality you’d expect from your local drugstore. The few exceptions are primarily among printers aimed at offices, but most office inkjets do a decent job. You can even find a few all-purpose inkjets whose output rivals photo printers meant for professional photographers.

If you’re looking for a home printer to output mainly photos, but also be capable of printing a range of other document types, you will definitely want an inkjet. Printers meant for home use fall into two categories: inexpensive models that typically cost far less than $100 for single-function printers and $150 or less for MFPs; and highly photo-centric printers, with prices of $150 or more for single-function models and $300 or more for MFPs.

Connectivity

Inkjets offer a wide range of connection choices. A few budget models offer only USB, often coupled with a low paper capacity, and are a good choice if you’re in the market for a light-duty personal printer, either in an office or at home. Many inkjets for both home and businesses add Ethernet ports.

If you’re interested in printing wirelessly, the good news is that nearly all inkjets today come with 802.11 Wi-Fi standard. The ability to support wireless printing from mobile devices is of growing importance to both businesses and consumers. Many manufacturers offer free printing apps that are compatible with their wireless printers.

Duty Cycles and Paper Capacity

While the majority of inkjet printers can be found mainly in a home or a home office, inkjet technology is showing up in more and more business-oriented models meant for heavier-duty printing, including high-end ones that can rival laser printers in speed. They tend to do this by using print heads that run the full width of a page. Although their maximum monthly duty cycles still fall short of heavy-duty lasers, higher-end inkjets are still capable of handling the printing needs (and, in the case of MFPs, copying, scanning, and faxing as well) of many workgroups and small offices.

Inkjets for the Office

Office-oriented inkjets include the few single-function printers and MFPs designed for relatively heavy-duty printing, as well as those that have office-centric features. For instance, they can work as standalone fax machines; fax directly from your PC’s hard drive; and scan to email easily, using your PC’s email program and automatically adding the scan as an attachment.

Office MFPs add an automatic document feeder (ADF) for easy scanning, faxing, and copying of multipage documents. Some ADFs can scan both sides of a page. Of those, duplexing scanners, which scan both sides of a page at once, are much faster than models with duplexing or reversing ADFs (two names for the same thing), which scan one side, flip the page over, and then scan the other.

Specialty Inkjet Printers

Inkjets are the only kind of printer with models for mobile use (other than a few thermal-dye printers that need special thermal paper) and with all-in-one models meant specifically for the dual role of home and home office. If you’re looking to print documents while on the road, you’ll definitely want a mobile inkjet. Mobile printers typically have low paper capacities, but make few other compromises. They tend to cost more than comparable non-mobile inkjets, however, with prices averaging about $250.

Dual-purpose MFPs combine office-centric and photo-centric features. To help keep prices down despite all the features, some, but not all, cut corners on paper handling and speed. These are a good fit if you need a single printer for your home and home office, with extra functions like faxing, but don’t usually print many pages.

Best Vacuum Specifically Designed for Pets

Shedding is natural for our furry companions and getting rid of all that hair is a lot tougher than a novice pet owner would think – the first line of defense is a vacuum specifically designed to clean pet hair. As a backup for those with tiled or wooden floors, you could then follow up your cleaning process by using a high-quality steam mop.

Different Types of Vacuums for Pet Hair

There are several options you will want to consider – these can include upright vacuums, canister vacuums, and all-around vacuums. Canister vacuums usually offer greater maneuverability over close edges compared to the upright vacuums.  There are also some great cordless stick vacuums such as the Bissell Bolt XRT Pet 2-in-1 Cordless Vacuum which do a great job on pet hair.

Buying Guide – Things to Consider When Deciding on What Vacuum to Buy

With so many vacuum cleaners and vacuum cleaner brands available, choosing the right product for your needs can be confusing. There are specific factors that you need to evaluate before settling on the right vacuum cleaner, such as:

1. Bag Versus Bagless Vacuum Cleaners

This is another confusing element when it comes to the choice of vacuum cleaners. A vacuum “with a bag” will store the collected dirt and dust and you will have to purchase a package of bags when buying the vacuum – as they typically have a limited lifespan and will need to be replaced. Bagged vacuums generally have a cheaper upfront cost, but higher ongoing costs.

The bagless vacuum, on the other hand, will save you the inconvenience of having to purchase bags for your cleaner. Emptying a bagless vacuum is much nicer as you do not have to touch a dirty bag, and retrieving those accidentally vacuumed earrings is also easier. The tradeoff is a much lower ongoing cost (no need to buy replacement bags) vs. the higher initial outlay.

2. The HEPA Air Quality Feature

The HEPA feature (which stands for High-Efficiency Particulate Air) is a very important function, which many modern vacuum cleaners now have, and is responsible for filtering out particles (pet fur and dander, for example) in the air leaving your home free of allergens. The HEPA is usually replaced on a regular basis based on the manufacturer’s recommendation – although some vacuums like the #1 Dyson have Non-washable lifetime HEPA filter, and the Shark and Hoover vacuums on our list have washable filters.

3. The Power and the Performance of the Vacuum Cleaner

It goes without saying that you’re going to use your vacuum to pick stuff up – so the suction power of a pet hair vacuum is important. A model with low suction will only remove surface dust, without collecting the dirt and hair that’s stuck in carpet or upholstery or picking up heavier material like cat litter.

It can be difficult to compare models in this regard since the suction is measured by several different metrics and the ones that manufacturers are likely to boast about don’t really tell you much about the actual suction. For example, watts, amps, and horsepower tell you about the amount of power the motor uses or puts out. They usually not use measurements when it comes to suction, because they don’t measure how efficiently the vacuum uses the power it consumes.

4. Consider the Areas That You Will Be Vacuuming

It’s a much easier task to remove a short-haired pet’s loose fur from a hardwood floor than it is to suck out what seems like “half a cat” from a carpeted cat tree or the deep folds of an upholstered couch. That’s why it’s important to consider where (and what) you’ll be vacuuming before choosing a machine. A vacuum with incredible suction – and a price tag to match – could be overkill for routine jobs.

5. Pet Hair Vacuum Accessories

While we’re on the subject, here a few of the accessories you might want to look for when choosing a pet hair vacuum. Some models include them with your purchase; other manufacturers make them available as options. Depending on your situation, all can be helpful.

  • Turbo Eraser: This powered tool adds extra suction power for those really difficult areas where pet hair has wedged deep into carpets or upholstery.
  • Telescoping Extension Wand: Your pet loves to climb and explore? That means there’s probably pet hair in hard-to-reach spots, and an extension wand helps you clean them up easily.
  • Lighted Crevice Tool: Many vacuums come with LED lights on their crevice tool, but it can be invaluable when searching for hidden hair.
  • Disinfection Tool: It does what the name implies, and it’s particularly helpful in homes with sensitive occupants (or smelly pets).
  • Grooming Kits or Tools: These allow you to use your pet hair vacuum to suck the loose hair right off of your pet – assuming he or she will stay still long enough to be groomed.

5 Best Desktop Pc Consumer Reports 2019 – Top Rated

These days, it’s not unusual for individuals or families to have more than one type of computer. If you’re looking to carry your computer to work or on vacation, you obviously need a laptop. And some have slimmed down to weigh as little as a couple of pounds.

If mobility isn’t a concern, get a desktop, because it’s very likely that you’ll get more performance for the same money—plus more flexibility in customizing the machine once you buy it. (That’s one reason lots of serious gamers have desktops.) Those are two major categories of computer, but there are several variations to consider—and we haven’t even mentioned the choice of operating system yet.

Choosing a Processor, an OS, and More

Speed matters. Processors with multiple cores can process more data simultaneously, with four cores now increasingly common on laptops. Our ratings say how many cores a laptop’s processor has.

Clock speed, measured in gigahertz (GHz), along with the number of cores and other factors, determines how quickly a processor can process information. Many processors can up the speed a bit for a brief time to yield maximum performance. Generally, within a processor family, the higher the clock speed, the faster the processor. Clock speeds typically start at around 1 GHz for a mobile processor. Speeds can exceed 5 GHz for a desktop processor.

Power Consumption
Another important factor when choosing a processor, especially for laptops: Lower power consumption equals longer battery life. If you’re looking for a very basic or budget computer to browse the web, email, and work on Office documents, basically every processor on the market should be sufficient. If you plan to watch high-resolution videos or play mainstream games, you should consider the Intel Core i5 and AMD’s Ryzen line of processors.

How Much Memory?
The more memory a computer has, the faster it is, up to a point. Memory is measured in gigabytes (GB). On both desktops and laptops, 8GB has become common, with 16GB found on higher-end devices. Unless you regularly have multiple large apps open at the same time, 8GB should be your target.

Operating System
Windows 10 brings a more uniform interface across a variety of devices: computers, tablets, Xbox consoles, and smartphones. In addition, “universal apps” developed for Windows 10 will look and work the same on a variety of devices. And far more games are available for Windows computers than for Macs.

Macs can be more expensive, but they’re less prone to most viruses and spyware (in part because there are more Windows PCs out there than Macs, making them a bigger target for hackers), and Apple’s support has been tops in our surveys. The company’s phone support is free for only 90 days, but you can get unlimited technical support through the Genius Bar at an Apple Store. The latest version of macOS (previously known as OS X) is called Mojave and was released in the fall of 2018.

Graphics Adapter and Graphics Memory
Also known as the video card, graphics processing unit (GPU), or graphics card, this hardware is responsible for drawing what you see on your screen. Graphics processing comes in two basic flavors: It can either be integrated into the same chip that’s running the rest of the computer or it can run on a discrete piece of equipment.

Most computers have integrated graphics. This has usually been the less expensive and lower-performing option—fine for most tasks but not for serious gaming. If you play mainstream and extreme games with all the visual effects turned on or if you edit video, especially HD and Ultra High Definition (4K), you need discrete graphics. Light video editing and gaming and all other typical computer tasks will do fine with integrated graphics.

All About Drives and the Battery

Solid-State Drives: SSDs are a different type of storage technology, letting your computer access data without the moving parts required by a traditional hard drive. They are also the single largest performance boost you can give a computer over an identical computer with a hard drive.

SSDs don’t have the spinning disk of a conventional hard drive, so they use less power, work more quietly, and should be more resistant to damage—and less likely to fail mechanically.  And because there are no moving parts, access to data should be quicker.

The Best 50 Inch Lcd TVs

The TV resolution question used to be between the options of 720p (1,280 by 720 resolution, or just under one million pixels) and 1080p (1,920 by 1,080, or just over two million pixels). Then it moved on to 1080p versus Ultra HD, or 4K (3,840 by 2,160, with eight million pixels). Now it’s no longer a question: 4K has become the standard for medium-sized and larger televisions from every major manufacturer.

The higher resolution no longer commands a huge premium, and you can now find a 65-inch 4K TV for under $1,000. Realistically, you’d be hard-pressed to find a TV from a major brand larger than 40 inches that aren’t 4K. In fact, every TV on this list is 4K.

You may also notice that there’s a newer TV technology, called OLED TV, that dominates our current TV ratings in the larger size categories. These sets are still pricier than LCD/LED models—though every year that price gap narrows—so you’ll need to decide if it’s worth splurging for a top-performing set. Also, every year top-performing LCD TVs get better, edging closer to OLED TV-like performance. Right now OLED TVs are available from only two brands, LG Electronics and now Sony, so you’ll have fewer choices than you will with LCD-based sets.

Screen Size

Perhaps the most important choice you’re going to make with a new TV is the size of the screen. TV screens are measured diagonally, and they range in size from fewer than 20 inches to more than 80 inches. However, not many people shop at the extremes. Televisions going into kitchens or small bedrooms might measure just 24 to 32 inches, but if you’re shopping for your primary TV, we recommend going bigger—say, a set with a 50- to 65-inch screen. You could consider an even bigger set for spacious family rooms or if you’ll be sitting very far from the TV.

While there are no hard-and-fast rules for determining the right size TV—personal preference, the field of view, and even visual acuity come into play—there are some general guidelines you can use. You can try one of the many online calculators that are available free or apply the following, easy-to-use, equation.

Choose Between HD and Ultra HD

These terms refer to the TV’s native resolution. A regular high-definition (HD) set is also a called a 1080p model because its screen resolution is 1920×1080. That means it has 1,920 pixels horizontally and 1,080 pixels vertically, so it contains roughly 2 million pixels in all. Think of pixels, short for “picture elements,” as the tiny individual dots that make up the TV’s picture.

Ultra-high definition (UHD) TVs, also called 4K TVs, have screen resolutions of 3840×2160, so they contain 8 million pixels or four times the number of individual pixels as an HD set. The more densely packed array of pixels in UHD sets makes them capable of greater picture detail. The benefits of a UHD TV are more apparent in larger screen sizes—say, 65 inches and above—or when you’d like to sit closer to the TV than you could with a 1080p set.

High Dynamic Range (HDR)

As we previously noted, perhaps the TV industry’s biggest buzzword is high dynamic range or HDR. When done right, HDR boosts a TV’s brightness, contrast, and color, making the pictures on the screen look more like real life.

As you can see in the dramatized image below, when HDR is at work, you’ll see details that might not otherwise be obvious, from the texture of the brick on a shady walkway to nuances in the white clouds in a daytime sky.

You’ll also see brighter, more realistic “specular highlights,” which are glints of light, such as the sun’s reflection off a car’s chrome bumper or an airplane wing. With HDR, those highlights pop; without it, they wouldn’t stand out against other bright objects. HDR does all that by increasing the contrast between the brightest whites and the darkest blacks a TV can produce. That’s where the “dynamic range” in the name comes from.

5 Best Wrist Blood Pressure Monitor Consumer Reports 2019 – Top Rated

High blood pressure—known as the silent killer—has no obvious symptoms, yet one-third of Americans have the condition, many without knowing it. Hypertension can increase your risk of heart attack, stroke, kidney disease, and a number of other serious health problems.

But when it comes to keeping track of this important number, an occasional doctor’s office check of your blood pressure may not be giving you the full picture, experts say. “Blood pressure varies a lot during the day,” says Beverly Green, M.D., M.P.H., senior investigator and family physician at the Kaiser Permanente Washington Health Research Institute and Kaiser Permanente Washington in Seattle. “A single good blood pressure measurement … may not be enough information.”

Why Monitor at Home?

Research shows that home blood pressure monitoring can help people with hypertension keep it under control. A 2010 analysis from the independent Cochrane Collaboration, for example, found that self-monitoring led to lower numbers in both systolic (top) and diastolic (bottom) blood pressure. And recent preliminary research suggests that using a home blood pressure monitor may help people with uncontrolled hypertension get their numbers under control.

How to Buy the Best Monitor for You

Pick a top-scoring model that has the features you need and that will make testing easier for you. For example, some models allow you to store readings for more than one user. All the models we recommend are rated Excellent for accuracy, but there are other factors to consider, too. Follow these tips to help you select the best monitor for you:

Check the Fit
Make sure the blood pressure monitor you choose has a cuff that fits the circumference of your upper arm or wrist. (Use a tape measure to be certain.) Using a cuff that’s the wrong size can result in inaccurate readings. Most of the arm models we tested have two cuffs or a cuff that can be adjusted to fit most people. Wrist models also fit most people.

Consider Cost
The recommended models in the ratings (available to members) were priced from $40 to $100. But shop around. And find out whether your insurance covers blood pressure monitors.

Choose One That’s Easy to Use
The display on the monitor should be easy to read. The buttons should be large and intuitive. The directions for using the cuff and operating the monitor should be clear.

Select the Features You Need
There are many features to look for when selecting a blood pressure monitor. Here are some to consider: irregular-heartbeat detector, risk-category indicator, multiple user memories, multiple cuffs, memory download capability, large-digit display, and data averaging function. For more details, check out our ratings and click the Features and Specs tab.

How We Test

We rate blood pressure monitors based on their difference from a reference model. Our testing methods are patterned after but are not identical to, the U.S. ANSI/AAMI/ISO 81060-2:2013, British Hypertension Society and European Society of Hypertension (rev 2010) standards. For simplicity, in our rating tables, we generally show summarized results of our tests. For example, the displayed result for accuracy is a composite of the tests based on the three standards mentioned above.

Using Your Home Monitor Properly

Take the blood pressure monitor you’ve purchased to your doctor’s office, so your care team can make sure you’re using it correctly and test whether its results are the same as the office monitor’s. The American Heart Association recommends doing this once a year to make sure your device is still working properly and getting accurate readings. And note that even the best home blood pressure monitor can still give inaccurate readings if it’s used improperly. The following tips from the AHA can help:

• Don’t smoke, drink any caffeine, or exercise for at least 30 minutes before you measure your blood pressure.

• Use the bathroom and then rest quietly for 5 minutes before taking a reading.

• Wrap the cuff around your bare arm, without any clothes in between the cuff and your skin.

• Sit on a sturdy chair with a supportive back (not a sofa), with your feet flat on the floor. Your arms should rest on a flat surface. The cuff of the device, whether it’s on your arm or wrist, should be at the same level as your heart.

• Take readings at the same time every day—such as morning and evening—for whatever time period your doctor advises. And each time you sit down to take your blood pressure, you should take two or three readings, 1 minute apart. Record your results and take them to your next appointment.
