5 Best Earbuds Consumer Reports 2019 – Top Rated

May 31, 2019 by Dennis

Since it’s always good to get a personal recommendation, we did some research and pulled out the best earbuds on Amazon, based on actual customer reviews. We looked at which products have the most reviews and highest star ratings to compile this list, which features the earbuds that the greatest numbers of people have been happiest with. We’ve also split them into categories: the ones you’ll need a headphone jack or the beloved dongle for, the wireless Bluetooth earbuds that are still connected with a cord, and the truly wireless earbuds that are as discrete as you can get.

Earphones vs. Earbuds

If you’re a music lover, chances are you’re not happy with your phone or media player’s bundled earphones. Most of the time, they sound pretty dismal. Some devices don’t come with any earphones at all, but even the models that do include them tend not to offer a high-quality listening experience. Your music and video can definitely benefit from an upgrade.

Technically speaking, earbuds are not earphones, as they don’t enter your ear canal. Instead, they sit just outside of it, where it’s easy to become loose and cause problems when it comes to accurate stereo imaging (in which both ears get the same amount of audio) and bass response. Earphones, meanwhile, fit in the ear canal and form a seal inside your ear, blocking outside noise while piping sound directly into your ears.

That said, the term earbuds have become synonymous with earphones and in-ear headphones, so the difference is ultimately academic. Whatever you call them and whatever they say on the box, you should look for earphones that form a good seal inside your ear with silicone or foam ear tips. They’ll sound much better than plastic-covered drivers cupped against your ear canal.

Wired, Wireless, or Wire-Free?

Earphones can connect to your smartphone through a 3.5mm cable or wirelessly over Bluetooth, depending on the model. Wired earphones are generally less expensive, and you don’t need to worry about keeping them charged. Bluetooth earphones are more convenient because you don’t have to physically connect them to your smartphone, but they need battery power to work. For the most part, you won’t find a 3.5mm port and removable cable on Bluetooth earphones; when they’re out of power, they’re out of commission until you charge them again.

We’re starting to see some very compelling wire-free earphones now, with companies like Bose and JLab offering sets with the power, longevity, and intuitive controls necessary for us to recommend them. Typically wire-free earphones are more expensive than conventional wireless earphones, but if that wire running between the earpieces is a constant nuisance for you, it could be a worthy purchase.

Good for Workouts

Earphones might not be as eye-catching as headphones, but they can be much more convenient. Besides their size and weight, earphones are often more resilient than headphones when dealing with moisture. This is important if you want to listen to music at the gym. Earpads can get soaked and worn with a solid sweat, and they aren’t built to withstand the regular, constant friction that comes with working out. Earphones can be built to be water- and sweat-resistant, and hold up much better to activity.

Not all earphones are workout-friendly, though; don’t assume your earphones will handle what you throw at them unless they’re fitness-oriented earphones, or at least are explicitly listed as water- and sweat-resistant. Really pricey earphones can be as fragile as really pricey headphones, and you don’t want to accidentally ruin a $200 pair with ear sweat.

Caring for Your Earphones

Whichever model you choose, make sure to use the included pouch or carrying case as often as possible in order to preserve the longevity of your earphones. Balling them up, shoving them into a pocket, and then untangling them each time you want to listen does more to wear them out prematurely than just about anything else. Getting In The Right Gear

The bikes we’ve tested have cost from about $300 to nearly $2,000. We found that more money buys a lightweight frame made of carbon fiber, aluminum (or a combination of both materials), or high-strength steel and other high-quality components. But you can still buy a good bike for just a few hundred dollars.

Decide What Kind of Riding You’ll Do
That will narrow your choice to one of the four basic types. If you’re an avid cyclist, you may prefer a conventional road bike. Looking for a leisurely ride on flat, paved roads? A comfort bike may be more your speed. If rugged trails are in your sights, then a mountain bike might be best.

Find a Good Bike Shop
You’ll pay more, but we think you’re more likely to be satisfied. Bikes from big-box stores might not be properly assembled or well matched to your body. If you don’t like the pedals or seat on a particular model, some bike shops will swap components at little or no cost.

Take a Test Ride
Before you buy any bike, ride it far enough to make sure that the brakes and shifters are easy to use, the fit is comfortable, the gears can go low enough for climbing hills, and the frame and suspension adequately smooth the bumps.

Avoid Cheap Bikes, Except for Very Casual Use
Inexpensive bikes—those selling for less than about $200, often in big-box stores—may seem like good deals, but we advise spending $300 or more if your budget allows. Why? Because you’ll get a lot more bike for your buck.

Mass-market bikes have cheaper construction than higher-priced bikes and can weigh seven or eight pounds more. They come in only one size, so you’re not likely to get a great fit. And mass merchants can’t match bike shops for quality of assembly, expert advice, and service.

Consider These Extras
A good bike helmet is essential. Special cycling shoes and cleats can ease your pedaling. Gloves will absorb vibrations and help to protect your hands in a spill. Polycarbonate glasses can shield your eyes from bugs and errant pebbles. A water bottle is handy to have on long, hot-weather rides.

Features

You usually have some choice in choosing bike features. A bike shop may swap certain components at little or no cost.

Brakes
Some bikes are available with more than one type of brakes. V-brakes or linear-pull brakes, caliper brakes, and cantilever brakes are fine for most biking. For generally high performance, go with disc brakes, which can be either mechanical or hydraulic. Disc brakes will spare your wheel rims from the abrasion of muddy braking. A shop may be willing to retrofit some bikes that have caliper mounts with discs for about $100 extra.

Drivetrain
A bicycle’s chain runs between the crankset in the center of the bike and the rear cassette attached to the rear hub. Cranksets typically have two chainrings (called doubles) or three (triples). Shifting from one chainring to another provides coarse gearing adjustments while shifting among the sprockets in the rear cassette allows fine gearing adjustments. The total number of speeds a bike has is the number of chainrings multiplied by the number of sprockets in the rear cassette. For example, a bike with triple front chain rings and a nine-sprocket cassette have a total of 27 speeds. More speeds generally mean more flexibility on various grades.

Handlebars
High-rise handlebars let you sit fairly upright. The drop bars on conventional road bikes allow an aerodynamic, fully bent position. Handlebars and stems can be swapped to improve riding position. Different riders have different preferences. If you can’t get comfortable, consider replacing the handlebars or stem with a different type.

Saddle
Some are narrow and firm, others, wide and soft. Some have a suspension seat post, others are mounted rigidly. If you don’t like a seat, get one with a different shape, more or less padding, or channels or cutouts to ease the pressure.

The narrow, firm seats on road bikes and mountain bikes provide more control and let you change position and pedal more efficiently. But the wider, more cushioned seats on comfort bikes and many hybrids are more comfortable for the casual, less-frequent rider.

Shifters
The front derailleur moves the chain between the rings on the crankset, while the rear derailleur moves between the sprockets on the rear cassette. Each derailleur is controlled by a shifter, one for each derailleur. Twist shifters are collars on the handlebars that you twist to change gears. Trigger shifters have one lever for upshifting and another for downshifting–one pair each for the front and rear gears. They click as you shift, so you don’t have to guess where the next gear is.

Bike Accessories
A helmet can provide lifesaving head protection in an accident. Cycling shoes with cleats can increase your efficiency while pedaling, but you might need to change pedals to accommodate them. Gloves will absorb vibration and help to protect your hands in a spill. Glasses can shield your eyes from bugs and errant pebbles.

Types Of Irons

It is crucial to understand the various types of golf irons to know which is best suited for your needs.

  1. Max- game improvement irons: These irons are normally meant for the beginner and the high handicapper. They are also known as cavity backs because of the large hollow cavity in the back of the club head. These irons are most forgiving as the sole and the top lines are bigger.
  2. Game improvement Irons: This type is more suitable for a larger section of players which includes the mid handicappers, beginners, and even professionals. It is more compact and thinner than the cavity back. The cavity is also smaller here.
  3. Blades: These irons are suitable for the professional and low handicappers because they have no cavity which means they are less forgiving. But they have a great feel and provide better control over the strikes.

Who Should Use The Forgiving Game Improvement Irons?

Your skill level is determined by your handicap number. Are you above 25 or below 5 will determine whether you fall into the high handicapper, mid-handicapper or low handicapper category? Those with a handicap above 25 should use the cavity backs because they have greater forgiveness.

With the improvement in technologies used to manufacture heads and shafts, even game improvement irons are been used by professionals because of better consistency and greater forgiveness. So if you opt for game improvement irons then you are making a long-term investment of at least five years.

Should Beginners Opt For Irons?

Yes, there is no doubt that irons are hard to master but that should not deter you from owning some. They are not for improving swing but they certainly play a role in improving your strokes and aid in the progress of your game. In fact, even players who want to improve their overall performance can use these irons and benefit from them. They are also used on PGA tours by professionals.

Where Do Beginners Go Wrong?

Most beginners always struggle to hit the ball right. They have problems primarily with the stance followed by the swing. Incidentally, no club can help you get the right wing from the word go; it comes with practice. Another common mistake that all beginners make is to hit the ball all over the club face and rarely in the center. Almost all club manufacturers are using technologies to overcome these issues and create clubs that are more beginner friendly.

Best Golf Irons Buyer’s Guide

Here is the complete buying guide on picking the best golf irons.

Things To Consider Before Buying Best Golf Irons

These are the vital things you need to consider before buying the golf clubs.

Know Your Strength:

Indeed, you are the biggest judge of yourself. Right!! You better know your gameplay more than anybody else. So, at the end of the day, you better know whether you need a blade design or cavity back or even game improvement irons. Blade Design is mostly for better strikers who know their game well. Usually, you get lesser forgiveness in the blade design.

Cavity back design aims to offer better playability whereas gaming improvement irons have wider soles and they are primarily designed to deliver greater forgiveness and higher launch. So, it’s entirely up to you that which design you need to pick.

Do you need multi-material Head?

Well, the multi-material head is a new trend now. Manufacturers are using the latest innovative technologies to deliver the best performance by manufacturing multi-material heads. So, for average golfers, I would recommend to use it.

Head Size matters?

Yes, it matters a lot. If you are a beginner then you need to have a bigger head for better striking. Most of the times, bigger is better. So, go for the bigger one.

Lighter Irons Or heavier?

Once again, it’s up to you. If you are ok with heavier irons than use the heavier one and vice versa. Your swing is the key so everything keeps that in mind while picking the irons all the time. So, this is a brief guide you need to know before buying the best golf irons.

May 25, 2019 by Dennis

Types of annuities

Fixed annuity

A fixed annuity sets a guaranteed payout for the rest of the beneficiary’s life. Fixed annuities can provide predictability and a steady income during retirement.

Variable annuity

A variable annuity’s payout stream is determined by the performance of an underlying investment. Variable annuities provide growth potential.

Indexed annuity

A combination of a fixed and a variable annuity is known as an indexed annuity. The annuitant receives a guaranteed minimum payout while the rest of the payment varies along with the underlying investment’s performance.

Immediate annuity

Immediate annuities begin to pay a short period after the investment is made. These can be fixed or variable.

Deferred annuity

Any money earned by investing in a deferred annuity will be accumulated until the payout is set to begin. Deferred annuities can be fixed or variable and can be converted to immediate annuities once the payout is desired.

How to choose an annuity

Expenses

Annuities have a reputation for becoming accompanied by hefty fees. While certain costs are to be expected, consumers should clearly understand them before purchase.

  • Surrender fees: Be sure to understand the surrender fee that will be paid if the money is taken out of the annuity before the contract time period is up.
  • Commissions: Similar to investment products, annuities are bought and sold on the market, and an advisor or agent makes a commission from the sale. This charge is paid by the consumer.
  • Monthly fees: Annuity monies are invested, often in mutual funds. These funds usually incur fund management fees, and the costs are passed on to the consumer.

Funding options

The initial funds used to purchase an annuity can come from many sources. There are also ways to add to an annuity once it has been created.

  • Single payment: The simplest option for consumers who have a lump sum of money and want to put it into an annuity is to write a check or wire the money to the company.
  • Series of payments: Some annuities allow consumers to initially fund the account with a small amount of money and then add to the principle periodically. This is a form of saving while growing money for retirement.
  • Social Security: Consumers can choose to reduce their Social Security benefits in the near term and use the savings for an annuity for the long term. Consumers should carefully consult a financial advisor regarding this option.

Investment options

Annuity funds are invested in various markets. Depending on the type of annuity, consumers can have more or less control over the underlying investment options.

  • Immediate annuities: An immediate annuity offers, as the name implies, immediate results. You make a lump sum payment and immediately (or almost immediately) begin to get a guaranteed monthly payment. Immediate annuities generally are paid out for the rest of your life, but they can also be paid out over another set period of time that you specify.
  • Fixed annuities: When you buy a fixed annuity, your rate is locked in for a guaranteed amount of time ranging from one to ten years. Your rate might still fluctuate, but it will never go below the amount you set with your fixed annuity. This type of annuity is good for people who want a low-risk insurance plan and aren’t concerned about growing their annuity.

Payout options

When purchasing an annuity, the consumer can choose how the future payments will be made.

  • Guaranteed period: This option provides a guaranteed number of payments. Upon death, the payments continue to a beneficiary for a set period of time.
  • Lifetime payments: The guaranteed payment, in this case, is for the lifetime of the annuity holder only. This option provides no survivor benefits. Lifetime payments may be appropriate for those with no beneficiaries.
  • Survivor payments: Popular with married couples, this type of payment will continue for the life of the holder and, upon death, will then continue for the life of the beneficiary as well.

Withdrawal options

There are several ways to withdraw money from an annuity. However, there are also many fees and penalties associated if the money is withdrawn before the age of 59 1/2. Consumers should be sure they clearly understand all the tax and other financial implications of withdrawals.

  • Annuitization: This option converts the current value of the annuity into a stream of payments. It provides a guarantee of steady income for the life of the annuitant or can provide a steady income to beneficiaries after the death of the annuitant, based on a chosen time period. Payments can be made using a fixed amount or a variable amount.
  • Systematic withdrawal: With this option, the consumer chooses how much and when payments will be made. This can include withdrawing only the earnings or withdrawing the principal and the earnings. However, there is no guarantee of payments for life when making withdrawals.
  • Lump sum: It’s possible to take the entire lump sum of an annuity’s value; however, the investment gain will be taxed as ordinary income. If a withdrawal is made before age 59 1/2, penalties will also be due.

Who should invest in annuities?

Savers

Annuities are an option for consumers who want to let their money grow and at the same time avert taxes on income. These consumers are usually confident that they will not need to access their money for a long period of time and reasonably expect to outlive their savings.

Savers plus income generators

This group of consumers wants both the ability to grow income and still have access to assets. They often include people nearing retirement age.

Retirees

For those who are now living from their savings, an annuity can create a predictable and guaranteed stream of income for life. People often use this income to cover essential retirement living expenses.

Social Security recipients

Individuals who have a Social Security or pension plan income may want to use an annuity to supplement these sources.

5 Best Tvs For The Buck Consumer Reports 2019 – Top Rated

May 24, 2019 by Dennis

You may also notice that there’s a newer TV technology, called OLED TV, that dominates our current TV ratings in the larger size categories. These sets are still pricier than LCD/LED models—though every year that price gap narrows—so you’ll need to decide if it’s worth splurging for a top-performing set. Also, every year top-performing LCD TVs get better, edging closer to OLED TV-like performance. Right now OLED TVs are available from only two brands, LG Electronics and now Sony, so you’ll have fewer choices than you will with LCD-based sets.

Once you know what type of TV you want, focus on getting the right size, picture quality, and a few key features. And make sure your new TV has the connections required for equipment such as a streaming media player or soundbar speaker. (Our full TV ratings, available to members, provide all the picture-quality evaluations you’ll need.

Are All HDR TVs Created Equal?

No. Our tests show that not every TV with “HDR” written on the box produces equally rich, lifelike images.  First of all, TVs are all over the map when it comes to picture quality, HDR or no HDR. But there are also challenges specific to this technology. Most notably, a TV might not be bright enough to really deliver on HDR. To understand why you need to know your “nits,” the units used to measure brightness.

Better-performing HDR TVs typically generate at least 600 nits of peak brightness, with top performers hitting 1,000 nits or more. But many HDR TVs produce only 100 to 300 nits. With an underpowered TV, the fire of a rocket launch becomes a single massive white flare. With a brighter television, you’d see tongues of fire and smoke, as if you were really there.

How Can I Tell a Great HDR TV From a Bad One?

Unfortunately, you can’t just read the packaging—or even rely on how the picture looks in the store. Though some TVs carry an “Ultra HD Premium” logo, indicating that they’ve been certified as high-performance sets by an industry group called the UHD Alliance, not all companies are going along. For example, LG and Samsung participate in the program; Sony and Vizio don’t.

What to do instead? Check our TV ratings and buying guide.

As you’ll see, TVs with the best HDR tend to be the priciest. But there are also some good choices for people who want to spend less. And if you’re buying a smaller set, or just want to wait on 4K and HDR, you can find several good—and inexpensive—options.

Decide Whether You Want a Smart TV

Like cat videos and Kardashians, smart TVs seem to be everywhere. These increasingly popular televisions can access online content, such as streaming video services from Amazon Prime and Netflix. Basic smart TVs may be limited to the most popular services, and others offer a vast assortment of apps. Many have full web browsers, and more sophisticated smart TVs can respond to voice commands, make program recommendations, and let you view content from your smartphone on the TV screen.

Around 70 percent of the TVs sold these days are now smart TVs, according to market research firm IHD Markit. But if you’re considering a more basic TV or you already have a TV that lacks smarts, you can easily add internet capability using a separate streaming media player, such as an Amazon Fire TV, an Apple TV, a Google Chromecast, or a Roku player. Prices start as low as $30 for a smaller 1080p models, and 4K players start around $70.

Streaming Media Players

Streaming media players are a popular add-on for TVs, bringing streaming movies, TV, music and games to TVs that lack internet access. Even if you own a smart TV, you may consider a streaming player if it has features or services your TV doesn’t.

The Google Chromecast Ultra, $70, and new Roku Streaming Stick+, $70, are stick-style players that support 4K. There are also a number of less expensive 1080p models that cost as little as $30. These types of streaming players plug directly into a TV’s HDMI port, so they can often disappear from view, although they need to draw power from the TV’s USB port or an AC adapter plugged into an outlet.

Smart TVs

Smart TVs, also called internet TVs or connected TVs, can be your bridge to a world of online content that you can access directly from the TV itself. Most smart TVs these days let you access multiple streaming video services, such as Amazon Prime, FandangoNow, Hulu, Netflix, or Vudu, plus one or more internet music services, such as Pandora or Spotify. Many smart TVs also let you go to social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter, and several support casual games as well.

Check the Viewing Angle

Despite many improvements, most LCDs still have a fairly significant shortcoming: limited viewing angle. (OLED TVs have virtually unlimited viewing angles, just like plasma TVs did.) That means the picture looks its best only from a fairly narrow sweet spot right in front of the screen. We recommend checking the viewing angle by watching a TV from off to the side, and from above and below the main part of the image. As you move away from the center of the screen, the image can dim, lose contrast and color accuracy, or look washed out.

5 Best Rifle Scope Consumer Reports 2019 – Top Rated

May 22, 2019 by Dennis

Avid hunters and shooters know the importance of owning a reliable rifle scope. The right scope can help improve your vision while shooting as well as your accuracy in hitting your target.  Whether you are a crossbow hunter looking to get into rifle hunting, a total novice, or an experienced shooter, purchasing a new rifle scope can be overwhelming.

Even so, you won’t find many firearm enthusiasts who don’t use some kind of optical sighting device, or scope, on their guns. So, you want to find the best rifle scope for your individual needs, especially if you want to consistently hit your mark.

Finding a great scope is important for a number of reasons, but primarily because it can really simplify your shooting and even improve your accuracy. If you aim through a scope, you’ve eliminated a third of the difficulty of lining up iron sights. By using a scope, you just line up your crosshairs, or reticle, with your target and go.

Factors To Consider

So, we know that using a scope can make shooting much simpler. Just line up your reticle with your target, and you are on your way. Even better, if you are a new shooter, learning to shoot can be easier with a scope than with iron sights, since the majority of rifle scopes also magnify.  The magnification means your target appears closer and becomes easier to shoot. If you need practice or are just beginning with shooting, this magnification can make quite the difference in hitting your targets and building confidence as a shooter.

The use of scope will only make your shooting easier, however, if you find one that provides all of the features you need and expect. If you end up with the wrong type of scope, or you get one that doesn’t meet your needs or wants, you aren’t likely to enjoy using it. That said, choose the right one, and you’ll likely be doing, even more, shooting, because it will just be that much more fun and satisfying.

Standard Features

Similar to most consumer products, there are a number of standard features you should expect from your rifle scope. These are the features that you want to ensure your scope has before purchasing. In a nutshell, rifle scopes are all about optics and magnification. Some of the standard features you should look for include:

  • Magnification to suit your shooting needs, whether short, middle, or long range
  • Great eye relief
  • Reliable clarity
  • The well-lit, large lens

While most scopes on the market will offer these standard features, keep in mind that they won’t all be at the same level of quality. Also, bear in mind that the features you need will differ vastly depending on the type of shooting you do. Long-range shooting, for example, can require very different scope features than close-range shooting.

Unique Features

In addition to the standard features you should always be looking for, you’ll find that there are also unique features that help a scope stand out from the rest. These are the features that are far less prevalent and really make the difference when shooting or hunting. Some of the more unique features you will find in some of the products below are as follows:

  • Night vision
  • Video recording
  • Dusk and dawn brightness coating

On our list, you will find that most scopes include nearly all of the standard features you should expect. However, you will also find riflescopes that offer a wide range of unique features that set them apart from the others.

You may realize that you don’t need any of those unique features. If that’s the case for you, just stick with high-quality, tried-and-true standard features. However, if you are looking for a scope that offers more bells and whistles, we have listed some of those, too, and you’ll learn if those less traditional features are really worth the investment.

Price

Keep in mind that additional features usually comes to a heavier price tag. For the enthusiast, that often does not matter much. However, for the beginner, the price tag may be one of your top considerations.

One good rule of thumb when it comes to purchasing a rifle scope is that you should spend at least half of what you paid for your gun. You are essentially adding on to your existing investment. And you don’t want to be using an expensive gun with a mediocre, lackluster scope. They should be aligned in terms of quality.

Warranty

One other factor to keep in mind when making your purchase is whether or not a warranty is included when you buy your scope. If there is a warranty, there is a bit less pressure on purchasing. And, for reasons similar to why you want a warranty, you may want to choose a manufacturer who provides excellent customer service. This will save you headaches in the future if you find that you have questions, concerns, or feedback related to your purchase.

Once you are clear on the features you need for the kind of shooting you’ll be doing and which features you want to help improve your skill or level of fun, you’ll be better equipped to find the right scope for you. Below, we’ve reviewed 15 of the top rifle scopes on the market. Within this list, you’ll surely find the features you both want and need.

Best Car Scratch Remover Buying Guide

Effectiveness

The first thing you have to look at should be the effectiveness of the scratch remover. There is no doubt you will be happy to know that the product you are using is going to deliver on the best performance in terms of removing the scratches. Some products can claim to do so but end up disappointing the user. As a result, you might want to get the best products from top brands. The top brands always assure the user of ending up with a good performance product.

Price

The price can often drive someone to pick a certain model over the others. As a result, there is the need to see what you will be getting for the price. No need to spend a lot of money on a product that will not work great at all. Take the time to compare the overall performances of the different products before making up your mind that a certain model is what you want.

Safety

The safety is definitely important when it comes to dealing with such type of products. Removing the scratches is only good if you know that the product is also there. The safety is all in terms of the compounds used to the product. Some chemicals might be too strong and thus not the best to use them in plenty. Look for disclaimers on the product bottle to understand more what you are dealing with.

Reviews

The reviews are definitely important for any product you might want to use. Having the reviews helps you to understand more what the model is all about. In the end, you will always find that you have more confidence in buying a product with many positive reviews. As a result, from the reviews above, you will have a great time choosing the best one for you.

Ease of use

You will definitely have to look at the ease of use of a product before buying it. Depending on the manufacturer, sometimes you have to buy additional accessories just to use it. Others will be supplied with the essential accessories for cleaning. As you can see, it is possible to pick the best product just as you would want.

How to Remove a Scratch from Car

Now that you have bought yourself the best car scratch remover, here is a simple guide on how to remove a scratch from the car.

  • Assessing the problem

The first thing you have to do is assess the problem. There is the need to know what kind of scratches you are working with. Some scratches are going to be deeper than others. With the light scratches, it is possible to use a few simple steps and you will be done with the removal of scratches.

  • Cleaning the surface

The next step for you is to clean the surface so that you can start working on it. You simply have to clean by using soap and water. As a result, you will be able to see the various scratches that are on the surface.

  • Light scratches

For the light scratches, you will not have to do a lot. You will just need to apply the scratch remover by using a pad or even a hand towel. After rubbing, you will get that there is even an improvement than how it was before.

Most car scratches are often light, so you can expect to get most of the scratches out in no time. Another thing is that the scratch removers have abrasives that help with removing the scratches and then polish the surface to look even better.

  • Sanding

When it comes to dealing with deeper scratches, you will find that sanding is required. This means that you will need to use a sanding block, sandpaper, or even a rubbing compound. Make sure that you sand the area with light pressure until the scratch disappears or the area looks dull.

  • Application of repair compound

Now that the surface is ready, you can apply the repair compound. You will have to use a microfiber pad or any other application material. Use a moderate force while applying the compound to the affected area. You might also want to refer to the instructions to learn more about using the scratch remover on overall.

  • Polishing

Another thing you have to keep in mind should be polishing now. With polishing, it helps with making sure that the paint is also back to its glossy look and not dull anymore. There is a need to make sure that the polishing is done as directed by the manufacturer. This will help you have a great looking car in the end.

  • Waxing

This step is only necessary for those products that lack wax in them. A bit of waxing is needed to make sure that the hard job you have done remains to look good on overall. This will always be better as compared to a fixed scratch without waxing. It even makes the paint look glossier for a long time.

What Do Life Insurance Ratings Mean for Me?

These ratings are meant to give you an idea of how the biggest players in life insurance stack up next to one another. Even though life insurance is “out of sight, out of mind” for the most part, you want to be sure that you’re working with a reputable company in case the policy is ever needed.

That said, ratings should always be taken with a grain of salt. Remember that these scores are averages and don’t account for every individual agent, policy, or customer experience. For instance: A company with a seemingly low customer service score might actually have great agents at your local branch. A company with sub-par coverage ratings could still offer specialty coverage items that you’re looking for.

Use our life insurance ratings as a starting point, but be sure to do your own research, too. Start by clicking the providers accompanied by a “†” symbol for more information about coverage, service, and in-depth company comparisons. And if you’re not comfortable comparing policy options on your own, we recommend speaking with an independent agent. They represent multiple companies and can help you find the one that best fits your needs.

 Our Life Insurance Rating System

Our rating system incorporates scores from official agencies like the National Association of Insurance Commissioners, as well as consumer-based survey groups like J.D. Power. We’ve translated each company’s rating scale into a five-star system to make comparisons a little easier.

Coverage and price ratings

To determine how satisfied customers are with their life insurance coverage — and the amount they’re paying for it — we looked to J.D. Power’s 2018 life insurance study. The survey polled more than 5,000 life insurance customers about their satisfaction with “policy offerings,” “statements and billing,” and “price.”

We considered all three factors in the “coverage and price” category but remember: Life insurance is incredibly personal. Your coverage needs will be different from the next guy’s, and prices can vary widely from person to person. If you’re interested in a company with a seemingly low rating in this category (“3.5” or below), it may still be worth checking out its coverage and getting a quote to see whether that insurer works well for your unique situation.

Customer service ratings

Because of the way life insurance is designed, you’ll interact with your provider rarely (if at all) after purchasing a policy. That said, situations, where there are interactions between company and customer, are relatively high-stakes. For instance: If a policyholder passes away, their insurer should ideally have responsive customer service and a smooth claims process so that an already-difficult situation doesn’t become even more strenuous for the family.

To gauge the quality of customer service at the top life insurance companies, we looked at two metrics: J.D. Power’s 2018 life insurance study, which measures customers’ overall satisfaction and their opinion of companies’ support channels, and the National Association of Insurance Commissioners, which keeps track of the number of official complaints filed against any life insurance company.

Policy offerings

This category simply shows which of the three main life insurance types a company offers (term life, whole life, and/or universal life). Most companies offer all three, but a few are more limited, so be sure to check that the companies you’re considering have what you need. Not sure which kind of life insurance is best for you? Start here with our guide to choosing the right life insurance policy.

Accessibility

Before considering policy options or pricing, you have to find a provider that will actually cover you. As a preliminary step, we cleared our initial provider list of any companies that limit their customer base.

That meant nixing providers that only write employer-sponsored group policies (like MetLife) and those with special eligibility requirements (like USAA). We also made sure each company writes policies in at least 40 states, so you won’t have trouble finding coverage in your area.

Understand the true cost of a personal loan

When shopping around for personal loans, the interest rate isn’t the only thing you’ll pay on your loan. Also, look into the fees the lender charges, such as origination fees, late fees, and prepayment penalty fees.

Lenders are required to state these fees before you apply, so be sure to read the fine print.

“Average rates on personal loans can vary widely,” says Joe Toms, president of online lender FreedomPlus. “An individual’s credit score will heavily determine the rates.”

To give you an idea of what interest rate you’d qualify for, here’s an average range by credit score:

What to look for in a personal loan

When evaluating personal loans, it’s important to consider several factors to make sure you get the right one for you. Here’s a quick summary of what to think about:

  • Availability: Some lenders only operate in select states.
  • Flexible use: Some lenders require that you use the funds for the reason specified in the loan application.
  • APR: How does the APR you’re offered stack up against the competition? Most online lenders allow you to check your credit without affecting your credit score.
  • Minimal fees: How much is the origination fee? Do prepayment penalties apply?
  • Customer service: Is it difficult to reach a human in the customer service department? Can they answer all of your questions quickly and accurately?
  • Application process: Is the application process seamless? And how long does it take to get funding once the loan application is approved?
  • Reputation: Is the lender accredited by the Better Business Bureau? What are other customers saying?

Is it a good idea to get a personal loan?

Taking out a personal loan can be easy, but that doesn’t mean it’s the best decision for you. It’s important to consider both the benefits and drawbacks of personal loans before you apply.

WEIGH THE RISKS & BENEFITS

Here is a list of the benefits and the drawbacks to consider when applying for a personal loan.

PROS
  • Typically don’t require collateral
  • You’ll get the money in just a few days
  • You can use the cash for just about anything
  • You may get a lower interest rate than on a credit card
  • Offer set repayment terms
CONS
  • Some do require collateral
  • You may qualify for a higher interest rate than on a credit card
  • They can encourage you to borrow when you don’t need it
  • Typically charge higher interest rates than a home equity loan or HELOC
  • Don’t allow you to borrow more than once like with a personal line of credit

Shop around and save

To make sure you get the best deal, avoid taking the first offer you get. Instead, use SuperMoney’s loan engine to get offers from several personal loan companies at once. This will help you compare and contrast various personal loans in one place.

“It is important to find a lender that is right for you and your situation,” says Toms. “It’s much more than just a stated rate
offered,” Toms recommends asking if the lender is committed to evaluating your individual situation.

“Some will have a direct conversation with the consumer that allows the consumer to provide information and context about their credit scores and profiles, savings, and other factors that indicate they are financially responsible,” he adds.

Qualification

Regardless of whether you’re dealing with a loan matching service or a direct lender, all lenders will eventually require your social security number to do a credit check. Online matching services will sometimes initially do a soft pull, but when you are ultimately matched with a lender, there will be a hard pull. As we mentioned, personal loans are unsecured, so the risk is higher on the lender’s side. By checking your credit, a lender will be able to see how you’ve managed previous debt and get an indication of how you may manage a loan with them. The minimum credit score accepted is typically in the low 600s, but of course, this depends on the lender.

Cost of Loan

The most important factor that will influence the ultimate cost of a personal loan is the Annual Percentage Rate (APR). The APR is the interest rate charged for a whole year, including any fees or additional costs associated with the transaction. Generally, the lenders we evaluate will advertise an APR range. The better your credit score, the lower your APR will likely be since the lender’s risk is diminished. Also, most personal loan providers offer a fixed interest rate, meaning the APR will not change throughout the life of the loan, making it easier to plan repayments. At the outset of the loan, many lenders charge application and origination fees.

Safest Motorcycle Helmet Type

There are numerous styles of helmets, but the three main designs are the full face, ¾, and the ½ helmet. In regards to safety, the full face helmet is the safest choice of the three.

The full face helmet offers the most coverage surrounding your head and neck. A full-face helmet protects you from the environment you’re riding in, whether it be inclement weather or debris and bugs hitting your visor. One of the distinguishing features of a full face helmet is a chin bar, which ¾ and ½ helmets lack. According to an Australian study, the chin encounters fifty percent of severe impacts during an accident. Only a full face helmet will offer you the protection to keep your chin and jaw safe.

Motorcycle Helmet Safety Standards

There are several safety standards for motorcycle helmets, and knowing what they cover can be confusing. They can overlap in requirements, and have different criteria in other respects.

According to motorcycle blogger, Motorbike Writer, “The most important feature in a helmet is its safety rating, so I’d check official ratings such as the UK SHARP website” (which will be discussed below). Here are the main safety standards and what you need to know about each:

Snell Memorial Foundation (M-95 / M2000)

The Snell Foundation certification is not a requirement by law in the United States (or around the world), but they go above and beyond the minimum criteria to thoroughly test helmets in many respects. Beyond motorcycle helmets, they test for bicycling, karting, and professional motorsports. Below are the safety features they test for:

  • Impact Testing – The impact test uses controlled impacts to simulate different impact surfaces. The object is to measure gravitational (G) force or acceleration. If the peak acceleration in any test exceeds a value, the helmet is rejected.
  • Positional Stability (Roll-Off) Test – A head form is mounted so that it points face downward at an angle of 135 degrees. The helmet is placed on the head form and the straps and buckles adjusted to obtain the best fit condition. Weight is connected via wire rope and dropped from a determined height. The helmet is turned 180 degrees and the test conducted again. The helmet may shift, but must not roll off the head form to pass the test.
  • Dynamic Retention Test – The helmet is placed on a head form with the chin strap fastened under a device representing the jaw. The jaw piece has a 23 kg weight applied for around one minute. The retention system is tested by simultaneously removing the 23 kg weight and applying a 38 kg mass in an abrupt guided fall. The retention system fails if it cannot support the mechanical loads or if the maximum instantaneous deflection (stretch) exceeds 30 mm (1.18 inches).
  • Chin Bar Test – The test helmet is attached to a base with the chin bar facing upward. A 5 kg weight is dropped to hit the central portion of the chin bar. Maximum downward deflection of the chin bar must not exceed the stated distance.
  • Shell Penetration Test – The test helmet is attached to a base. A sharp pointed 3-kg object is dropped from a prescribed height. The test striker must not penetrate the helmet or even achieve momentary contact with the head from inside the helmet.
  • Faceshield Penetration Test – The face shield (also called a visor) is attached to a test helmet and shot along the center line in three separate places with an air rifle. The rifle shoots sharp soft lead pellets at speeds approximately at 500 kph (310 miles per hour). The pellets must not penetrate the visor for it to pass the test.

SHARP

SHARP is a testing a rating system only available for helmets sold in the UK (United Kingdom / England). It measures just impact protection of the helmet based on similar testing to the other standards and rates helmets with a star rating system instead of a pass / fail result. The ratings are shown from a 1-star (lowest) to a 5-star (highest).

Motorcycle Helmet Fit

Each manufacturer helmet will fit slightly different. One brand may be a better fit for a round head, while others may fit better for an oval shape. You can read reviews from each manufacturer, but you may get the best understanding of what will fit you best by trying a few one. Sizing will vary from brand to brand, therefore, a medium in one brand may fit like a large in another. Again, trying on a few may give you the best feedback.

Current helmet technology involves an inner liner to absorb shock, made of EPS (expanded polystyrene) foam. There is a comfort liner that riders often mistake for a protective component, which also does provides some padding. A helmet should also have EPS foam in the lower area to properly protect the face and jaw.

When To Replace Your Motorcycle Helmet

Motorcycle helmets should be replaced every five years, assuming you have not had any direct impacts that would jeopardize the impact protection of the helmet. This recommendation is from a consensus of helmet manufacturers and the Snell Memorial Foundation after studying the effects on a helmet from regular use. Helmet degradation is caused by normal wear and tear, hair oils, and body fluids and cosmetics. Cleaners, paints, fuels and other materials also affect the liner materials and overall helmet performance.
