Earphones vs. Earbuds

If you’re a music lover, chances are you’re not happy with your phone or media player’s bundled earphones. Most of the time, they sound pretty dismal. Some devices don’t come with any earphones at all, but even the models that do include them tend not to offer a high-quality listening experience. Your music and video can definitely benefit from an upgrade.

Technically speaking, earbuds are not earphones, as they don’t enter your ear canal. Instead, they sit just outside of it, where it’s easy to become loose and cause problems when it comes to accurate stereo imaging (in which both ears get the same amount of audio) and bass response. Earphones, meanwhile, fit in the ear canal and form a seal inside your ear, blocking outside noise while piping sound directly into your ears.

That said, the term earbuds have become synonymous with earphones and in-ear headphones, so the difference is ultimately academic. Whatever you call them and whatever they say on the box, you should look for earphones that form a good seal inside your ear with silicone or foam ear tips. They’ll sound much better than plastic-covered drivers cupped against your ear canal.

Wired, Wireless, or Wire-Free?

Earphones can connect to your smartphone through a 3.5mm cable or wirelessly over Bluetooth, depending on the model. Wired earphones are generally less expensive, and you don’t need to worry about keeping them charged. Bluetooth earphones are more convenient because you don’t have to physically connect them to your smartphone, but they need battery power to work. For the most part, you won’t find a 3.5mm port and removable cable on Bluetooth earphones; when they’re out of power, they’re out of commission until you charge them again.

We’re starting to see some very compelling wire-free earphones now, with companies like Bose and JLab offering sets with the power, longevity, and intuitive controls necessary for us to recommend them. Typically wire-free earphones are more expensive than conventional wireless earphones, but if that wire running between the earpieces is a constant nuisance for you, it could be a worthy purchase.

Good for Workouts

Earphones might not be as eye-catching as headphones, but they can be much more convenient. Besides their size and weight, earphones are often more resilient than headphones when dealing with moisture. This is important if you want to listen to music at the gym. Earpads can get soaked and worn with a solid sweat, and they aren’t built to withstand the regular, constant friction that comes with working out. Earphones can be built to be water- and sweat-resistant, and hold up much better to activity.

Not all earphones are workout-friendly, though; don’t assume your earphones will handle what you throw at them unless they’re fitness-oriented earphones, or at least are explicitly listed as water- and sweat-resistant. Really pricey earphones can be as fragile as really pricey headphones, and you don’t want to accidentally ruin a $200 pair with ear sweat.

Caring for Your Earphones

Whichever model you choose, make sure to use the included pouch or carrying case as often as possible in order to preserve the longevity of your earphones. Balling them up, shoving them into a pocket, and then untangling them each time you want to listen does more to wear them out prematurely than just about anything else. Important Features to Look For

When buying a pressing table, you need to analyze several models and see which one comes with everything you need for hassle-free ironing. To make sure you will not regret your choice, look for the following features next time you want to buy a board for your iron.

  • Adjustable height

If you want to stand comfortably while ironing, make sure your table can be adjusted to match your height. This way, you will prevent back pain from standing leaned over it and you will comfortably maneuver the iron.

  • Feet lock

Most boards come with collapsible feet and although these are helpful when storing it, they can be a real pain if they happen to collapse while you iron. Therefore, look for a table with a feet lock which prevents accidental collapsing.

  • Wide surface

A good model must provide enough room for both small and large garments especially if you want to iron sheets or towels. As such, do not think that a more compact unit will be more convenient because you might realize you needed some extra space.

  • Sleeve accessory

Pressing shirts is a woman’s worst nightmare because the sleeves are very hard to maneuver. Thankfully, the sleeve accessory can help you remove wrinkles without creating more while handling the shirt so you might want to consider getting it.

  • Rubber rest

Usually, the rest is made of metal that can get hot from the hot plate of the iron so you could get burned if you accidentally touch it. Therefore, make sure your table of choice has rubber or silicone pads which absorb heat.

  • Cover

In time, the cover can wear out and the padding can become flat, which could make the garments wrinkled when getting into contact with the frame. To avoid this situation, you can always purchase a new cover with thick padding so your clothes will remain neat after pressing. The cover is available in multiple sizes and designs and you can also find one for the sleeve accessory.

Why Use a Board?

If you do not have one at home already, you probably must be thinking why is it a must pressing on a special surface and not just any type of table. To convince you that you should start using it, here are a few of the main advantages brought by them.

  • Comfort

Without any doubts, you will feel more comfortable because it provides the perfect conditions for standing. Most models are height-adjustable so you will always be able to set it correctly so that you will not experience back, neck or feet pain in case you have a big stack of laundry to press.

  • Convenience

Another excellent thing about it is that it’s so easy to set and use. The legs are locking so there is no risk of it collapsing mid-process and it provides a wide surface where you can stretch all your laundry. Plus, you will have the iron within reach in the special holder and you can even hang hangers to store the pressed garments until they are ready to hit the closet.

  • Perfect results

Thanks to the large surface and the thick padding on top, the garments will come out perfectly smooth, without any wrinkles that might appear every time you have to twist and turn them. If you were to use a regular table, the hard surface would leave marks on the clothes and you would not be able to fit the sleeves of a shirt or the legs of a pair of pants.

  • Cleanliness

A special table for pressing provides a clean place where you can care for all your garments. You will have a restricted area where you will only handle the garments so no accidents or stains can appear, like it could if you were ironing on the dining table, for instance. You can complete your laundry room with it and you will find it extremely useful.

Accessories that Come in Handy

There are quite a few accessories that, if they don’t come with the board as you buy it, it’s advisable to purchase them separately for a more convenient, productive, and efficient de-wrinkling of the clothes. Considering that ironing the clothes is one of the chores that, let’s face it, no one is mad about, it’s important to either look into a model that comes with as many of them as possible or buy them separately. Here is the list of accessories that shouldn’t miss from your arsenal for a smooth ironing process:

  • Sleeve attachment: It is designed to connect with the board in order to allow an easier, more convenient ironing of the sleeves of shirts and blouses.
  • Over the door hooks: These hooks are meant to be installed over the door so that you can hang the board when you are not using it and save space in the dresser by doing so.
  • Cord holder: As the name suggests, it holds the cord of the iron so that it is out of your way when you press the clothes to remove the wrinkles.
  • Cleaning cloth: This accessory is intended for use on the iron more than on the board, with it cleaning any residue from the soleplate.

Getting In The Right Gear

The bikes we’ve tested have cost from about $300 to nearly $2,000. We found that more money buys a lightweight frame made of carbon fiber, aluminum (or a combination of both materials), or high-strength steel and other high-quality components. But you can still buy a good bike for just a few hundred dollars.

Decide What Kind of Riding You’ll Do
That will narrow your choice to one of the four basic types. If you’re an avid cyclist, you may prefer a conventional road bike. Looking for a leisurely ride on flat, paved roads? A comfort bike may be more your speed. If rugged trails are in your sights, then a mountain bike might be best.

Find a Good Bike Shop
You’ll pay more, but we think you’re more likely to be satisfied. Bikes from big-box stores might not be properly assembled or well matched to your body. If you don’t like the pedals or seat on a particular model, some bike shops will swap components at little or no cost.

Take a Test Ride
Before you buy any bike, ride it far enough to make sure that the brakes and shifters are easy to use, the fit is comfortable, the gears can go low enough for climbing hills, and the frame and suspension adequately smooth the bumps.

Avoid Cheap Bikes, Except for Very Casual Use
Inexpensive bikes—those selling for less than about $200, often in big-box stores—may seem like good deals, but we advise spending $300 or more if your budget allows. Why? Because you’ll get a lot more bike for your buck.

Mass-market bikes have cheaper construction than higher-priced bikes and can weigh seven or eight pounds more. They come in only one size, so you’re not likely to get a great fit. And mass merchants can’t match bike shops for quality of assembly, expert advice, and service.

Consider These Extras
A good bike helmet is essential. Special cycling shoes and cleats can ease your pedaling. Gloves will absorb vibrations and help to protect your hands in a spill. Polycarbonate glasses can shield your eyes from bugs and errant pebbles. A water bottle is handy to have on long, hot-weather rides.

Features

You usually have some choice in choosing bike features. A bike shop may swap certain components at little or no cost.

Brakes
Some bikes are available with more than one type of brakes. V-brakes or linear-pull brakes, caliper brakes, and cantilever brakes are fine for most biking. For generally high performance, go with disc brakes, which can be either mechanical or hydraulic. Disc brakes will spare your wheel rims from the abrasion of muddy braking. A shop may be willing to retrofit some bikes that have caliper mounts with discs for about $100 extra.

Drivetrain
A bicycle’s chain runs between the crankset in the center of the bike and the rear cassette attached to the rear hub. Cranksets typically have two chainrings (called doubles) or three (triples). Shifting from one chainring to another provides coarse gearing adjustments while shifting among the sprockets in the rear cassette allows fine gearing adjustments. The total number of speeds a bike has is the number of chainrings multiplied by the number of sprockets in the rear cassette. For example, a bike with triple front chain rings and a nine-sprocket cassette have a total of 27 speeds. More speeds generally mean more flexibility on various grades.

Handlebars
High-rise handlebars let you sit fairly upright. The drop bars on conventional road bikes allow an aerodynamic, fully bent position. Handlebars and stems can be swapped to improve riding position. Different riders have different preferences. If you can’t get comfortable, consider replacing the handlebars or stem with a different type.

Saddle
Some are narrow and firm, others, wide and soft. Some have a suspension seat post, others are mounted rigidly. If you don’t like a seat, get one with a different shape, more or less padding, or channels or cutouts to ease the pressure.

The narrow, firm seats on road bikes and mountain bikes provide more control and let you change position and pedal more efficiently. But the wider, more cushioned seats on comfort bikes and many hybrids are more comfortable for the casual, less-frequent rider.

Shifters
The front derailleur moves the chain between the rings on the crankset, while the rear derailleur moves between the sprockets on the rear cassette. Each derailleur is controlled by a shifter, one for each derailleur. Twist shifters are collars on the handlebars that you twist to change gears. Trigger shifters have one lever for upshifting and another for downshifting–one pair each for the front and rear gears. They click as you shift, so you don’t have to guess where the next gear is.

Bike Accessories
A helmet can provide lifesaving head protection in an accident. Cycling shoes with cleats can increase your efficiency while pedaling, but you might need to change pedals to accommodate them. Gloves will absorb vibration and help to protect your hands in a spill. Glasses can shield your eyes from bugs and errant pebbles.

Anti-snoring devices buying guide

Type of device

The availability of these gadgets in a variety of styles can create an enormous hassle. Especially, when selecting the best one, it becomes necessary to check type. The market offers mandibular enhancement, tongue stabilization, nasal strip, chin up to the strip and vestibular strip. Depending on what is causing snoring, one can choose their right devices. Of course, each type has benefits and cons, thus choose wisely to ensure you have a great time using them.

Perfect fit

Regardless of how good an anti-snoring device is, if it isn’t fitting performance is significantly compromised. With some device types, it can be problematic and will need doctor instruction. However, for others, it is easy to use and can be used without complications. Mostly, people experience problems fitting MAD while TSDs have few fitting issues.

Construction material

Even though anti-snoring gadgets are ideal to stop sleeping apnea, safety should be a priority. The construction of these devices features soft plastic materials. Always it’s wise to check soft device. It allows fitting without stressing your mouth. On the other hand, it should be free from harmful particles like BPA, and other banned chemicals.

Device adjustability

The adjustability of a device is vital. Whether MAD or TSD device, it should be flexible to ensure admirable comfort. Rigid devices might not deliver necessary comfort especially when you want adjustments.

Breathing style

The way you breathe when asleep determines the type of anti-snoring gadget to acquire. Before deciding the right type of device, know whether you breathe through nose or mouth. MAD and TSDs are good for nose sleepers. For mouth breathing, sleepers need devices with breathing holes.

How do anti-snoring devices work?

A bulk of anti-snoring devices are intended to unblock the airway that is narrowed as the back of the throat relaxes. The person breathes in, it vibrates, and the snoring sound is produced.

Another type of appliances is aimed at making the sleeper turn over on his or her side. The idea is to prevent the tongue from blocking the airway, which happens when the person is sleeping on their back. To this end, special devices with straps and pillows have been invented. They make the sleeper feel uncomfortable when lying on their back or can even push the snorer to turn over on his or her side.

There are suggestions that snoring contributes to the development of erectile dysfunction, but it is better to read about the treatment of impotence on the website.

Types of Anti-Snoring Devices Available on the Market

Oral appliances

Oral devices are meant for pulling forward the jaw and tongue so that there is more space in the throat, while the tongue and lower jaw do not collapse back. Such devices are considered by scientists to be effective but predominantly for mild sleep apnea.

What are the strong points? Oral appliances are portable, simple, and quiet. Beverly Merz, an Executive Editor at Harvard Women’s Health Watch, points out that oral anti-snoring devices can also be used by those who have moderate or severe OSA but will not be as effective as in the case of mild apnea.

Another disadvantage is that the patient will have to get used to wearing them as well as learn how to maintain the appliances. Also, regular visits to the doctor will be needed to make sure that the device keeps on working in a proper way. Besides, some people may have problems with putting their teeth together after the device is removed. Finally, oral appliances will cost you a vast deal of money.

5 Best Portable Air Purifier Consumer Reports 2019 – Top Rated

Take a deep breath—if you can. Many of the things we do to keep energy costs down, such as fixing drafty doors and leaky windows, can also seal in pesky pollutants and irritants. Many people who buy air purifiers do so in hopes of easing asthma or allergies. But despite product claims, there’s little definitive medical evidence that air purifiers help to relieve respiratory symptoms.

Improving indoor air quality starts with minimizing pollutant sources such as cigarette smoke, dust, and pet dander. We test how well a room air purifier removes dust and smoke from an enclosed space, how it performs at high and low speeds, and how quiet it is. The very best portable models we tested were effective at cleaning the air of dust, smoke, and pollen at their highest and lowest speeds. The worst models weren’t terribly effective at any speed.

Breathe Easier

Before you resort to buying an air purifier, try some simple steps to reduce indoor air irritants, including:

  • Vacuum often and thoroughly using a vacuum with high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filtration.
  • Ban smoking indoors.
  • Maintain your heating and cooling equipment, and change air filters regularly.
  • Minimize the use of candles and wood fires.
  • Use exhaust fans in the kitchen, bath, and laundry areas.
  • Don’t store chemicals, solvents, glues, or pesticides near your living quarters.

The Pros and Cons

Pros: They’re portable—most room air purifiers weigh from 10 to 20 pounds, have a handle, and stand on the floor or on a table. Heavier models might have wheels. Many have a HEPA filter, which can capture ultra-fine particles. Keep in mind that most of these filters need to be replaced annually, an expense that might approach the cost of the air cleaner, but a few models are now available with cleanable HEPA filters.

Cons: Portable models that use either electrostatic precipitator or ionizer technology could produce some ozone, a lung irritant. Electrostatic precipitator and ionizer air purifiers should not be confused with dedicated ozone generators, which produce large amounts of ozone by design. Ozone generators should be used only by professionals to reduce odors, germs, and mold. Ozone is a serious health concern, prompting the state of California to ban the sale of ozone generators (and other air purifiers that emit more than 50 parts per billion of ozone) from the general market.

Things to Consider

Operating Costs
Many portable models have annual operating costs of $150 to $200 for filter replacement and electricity (with the majority of that cost being for filters). Filter prices can generally range from around $10 to about $100 (though some are priced well into the hundreds). Some units use a pre-filter to capture large airborne particles before they reach the HEPA filter, possibly extending its life.

Depending on usage, you typically need to replace the carbon filters every three months and the main filter yearly. To cut costs, look for room models that are Energy Star certified, meaning they are relatively energy-efficient compared with standard models. Some models have washable filters that can be reused.

Keep It Clean
Any air purifier won’t work well if the filter is clogged and dusty, and if the filter is full, it may stop working entirely.

Quietness Counts
Noise level is important, especially if you run an air purifier in a room where you sleep or work. For the sake of efficiency (and quietness), we recommend picking a larger unit and running it on a lower speed, rather than cranking up a small one. Having a larger unit can also accommodate those times when you need to clean a room quickly, such as when cooking odors escape the kitchen exhaust hood.

Room Air Purifier Features

Fan: Most room air cleaners use a fan to suck in air for filtration. Those without a fan (the air circulates naturally throughout your home) run more quietly, but those we tested without fans worked poorly.

Servicing indicator: A clogged air cleaner works inefficiently. This feature lets you know when the unit needs to be cleaned or the filter replaced.

Programmable timer: These controls allow you to set the purifier to run a few hours before you’ll be using a room, or to turn it off automatically.

Carrying handle: This makes it easy to move the unit from room to room.

A number of speeds: The unit adjusts to your air-cleaning needs—lower when you are sleeping or working and need quiet, higher when it’s prime pollen time.

Ionizer: If a unit has an ionizer (which attracts particles via an effect like static electricity), it’s important that it not produce ozone. It may say on the box or in an operation manual whether it produces ozone; you can also check our ratings. Ozone is a lung irritant.

Remote control: This lets you easily adjust settings from across the room.

Dirt sensor: In some room models, the unit automatically adjusts the fan speed to the level of dirt or dust in the air.

Washable prefilter: A washable—and reusable—pre-filter collects large particles; it can help cut overall costs. However, many of our higher-rated models did not have this option.

Types Of Irons

It is crucial to understand the various types of golf irons to know which is best suited for your needs.

  1. Max- game improvement irons: These irons are normally meant for the beginner and the high handicapper. They are also known as cavity backs because of the large hollow cavity in the back of the club head. These irons are most forgiving as the sole and the top lines are bigger.
  2. Game improvement Irons: This type is more suitable for a larger section of players which includes the mid handicappers, beginners, and even professionals. It is more compact and thinner than the cavity back. The cavity is also smaller here.
  3. Blades: These irons are suitable for the professional and low handicappers because they have no cavity which means they are less forgiving. But they have a great feel and provide better control over the strikes.

Who Should Use The Forgiving Game Improvement Irons?

Your skill level is determined by your handicap number. Are you above 25 or below 5 will determine whether you fall into the high handicapper, mid-handicapper or low handicapper category? Those with a handicap above 25 should use the cavity backs because they have greater forgiveness.

With the improvement in technologies used to manufacture heads and shafts, even game improvement irons are been used by professionals because of better consistency and greater forgiveness. So if you opt for game improvement irons then you are making a long-term investment of at least five years.

Should Beginners Opt For Irons?

Yes, there is no doubt that irons are hard to master but that should not deter you from owning some. They are not for improving swing but they certainly play a role in improving your strokes and aid in the progress of your game. In fact, even players who want to improve their overall performance can use these irons and benefit from them. They are also used on PGA tours by professionals.

Where Do Beginners Go Wrong?

Most beginners always struggle to hit the ball right. They have problems primarily with the stance followed by the swing. Incidentally, no club can help you get the right wing from the word go; it comes with practice. Another common mistake that all beginners make is to hit the ball all over the club face and rarely in the center. Almost all club manufacturers are using technologies to overcome these issues and create clubs that are more beginner friendly.

Best Golf Irons Buyer’s Guide

Here is the complete buying guide on picking the best golf irons.

Things To Consider Before Buying Best Golf Irons

These are the vital things you need to consider before buying the golf clubs.

Know Your Strength:

Indeed, you are the biggest judge of yourself. Right!! You better know your gameplay more than anybody else. So, at the end of the day, you better know whether you need a blade design or cavity back or even game improvement irons. Blade Design is mostly for better strikers who know their game well. Usually, you get lesser forgiveness in the blade design.

Cavity back design aims to offer better playability whereas gaming improvement irons have wider soles and they are primarily designed to deliver greater forgiveness and higher launch. So, it’s entirely up to you that which design you need to pick.

Do you need multi-material Head?

Well, the multi-material head is a new trend now. Manufacturers are using the latest innovative technologies to deliver the best performance by manufacturing multi-material heads. So, for average golfers, I would recommend to use it.

Head Size matters?

Yes, it matters a lot. If you are a beginner then you need to have a bigger head for better striking. Most of the times, bigger is better. So, go for the bigger one.

Lighter Irons Or heavier?

Once again, it’s up to you. If you are ok with heavier irons than use the heavier one and vice versa. Your swing is the key so everything keeps that in mind while picking the irons all the time. So, this is a brief guide you need to know before buying the best golf irons.

Car Jump Starter Buying Guide

The car jump starter buying guide is written to help customers find the best possible guide to help them buy a car jump starter. Car jump starters may be a little tricky as there are many features to consider while we use them for our vehicles. Read on to find out about the significant features.

What type of jump starter do you want?

Jump boxes and plug-in units are entirely different from each other. Jump boxes are wholly closed and use permanent, no-maintenance batteries. Plug-in units are there to provide a bolt of amperage so that the engine of your vehicle can run smoothly. The following details will help you make your choice.

  • Plug in jump starters

These chargers can provide amps between 2 and 6. They have multiple settings to run their device and have a massive duty battery life. Once you start the device, you will have to wait for the unit to give ample power in due time. These car jumpers are cheaper than conventional ones. You will not get an instant charge but they will charge your car battery.

  • Jump boxes

Jump boxes have a battery inside a box ready to do some heavy duty work. The battery is not accessible and maintenance free. They do not have the power to recharge a dead battery, but they provide a load of amperage to get the car motor running instantly. It may be a nuisance since you will end up driving without an alternator though. However, these boxes have pros like being more versatile than you put it out to be.

Usage

Not all of us are professional car experts. Jump-starting can be a significant and severe thing to do in emergency situations. This reason is why you need to consider the usage of your jump starter. Most of them are complicated with more than one button to control them. However, if you are a car amateur, then it is the idea that you get the one with something as easy as one button only. An extra design may be a better option, but keep in mind that you know how to use it so that you do not cause any damage.

Amps and Wattage

A primary concern of the car jump starters is the amps and the wattage. Higher amps mean more battery life. Keep in mind that it depends explicitly on the type of the jump starter as well. If you are going for a plugin jump starter then 10 amps of power are enough for you. Meanwhile, if you choose to go for a jump box, then you will need something higher like about 1000 amps peak use, at least for the right jump start.

Battery and Its Charging

Since both of the jump starters run on batteries, the choosing of the right battery is very important. The first thing to see how long the batteries can remain charged for. Some batteries can last up to 3 months if not used. These options are great since you will not always be using the jump starter. Another important aspect is that how long does not the battery charge in? Why is the charging time relevant to the battery? The reason is simple; because you do not want to spend your whole life charging the jump starter.

Portability

Portability may not seem significant, but if you are planning on purchasing something that remains on the move, it can be essential. Buying a large and hefty jump starter is not an amicable decision. In case you want to use it, you will have to make the additional effort of taking it out from the truck and using it. Portable starters can fit into the glove compartment comfortably. They are lightweight, but you can carry them around easily and use as per your convenience.

Additional Different Features

There are several different features that car jump starters are starting to get within them. They are no longer a jump starter only, but they can help in many different emergencies as well. Catch up to read more about the various features for emergency situations.

  •  USB slots:

One of the most popular Debbie downers in the modern world is the dying battery of our smart devices. These die quickly because they are overused and they take up a lot of battery. If you are in your car and are planning on getting a jump starter, then something with USB slots that help keep your phone charged can help you a lot.

  • Flashlight:

These flashlights will help you see in the dark and even call for an emergency. Hence, having one is a great and smart option.

  • Tire inflator:

Getting a flat tire can be a problem solved with the tire inflator that car jump starters seem to offer to their clients. It may temporarily fix a flat tire, enough to help you get help.

  • Protection of circuits:

Any electrical device needs protection. A unit like a car jump starters needs to be weather resistant and have circuit protection so that it is not ruined in the changing weather. Circuit protection will also help in keeping the smart device safe when charging.

5 Best External Hard Drive Consumer Reports 2019 – Top Rated

An external hard drive works to expand three main functions of your computer. As opposed to an internal hard drive that is built into the computer, the external is bought separately to enhance what your computer can already do. A good drive works by allowing you more storage space, the ability to back up your data and to share this data with other computers. That’s why it is essential if you’re switching computers, as the external hard drive allows you to save this data and transport it to the new device. There are countless external hard drives to choose from, and which works best for you really depends on what you need to do, and what computer you already have.

It’s a Great Time to Go for a Drive

In an era when Apple charges 99 cents per month for 50GB of iCloud storage and Google offers 100GB of free storage for two years with the purchase of a new Chromebook, mainstream external hard drives might appear less essential than they once were. But modern external drives are faster, more stylish, and often more durable than their counterparts from a few years ago. They’re ever cheaper and more capacious, too. For about $50, you can add a terabyte of extra storage to your laptop or desktop by just plugging in a USB cable.

The Need for Speed: Hard Drive or SSD?

Solid-state drives (SSD) have fewer moving parts than a traditional hard drive, and they offer the speediest access to your data. Unlike a conventional disk-based hard drive, which stores data on a spinning platter or platters accessed by a moving magnetic head, an SSD uses a collection of flash cells—similar to the ones that make up a computer’s RAM—to save data. (For an in-depth look at exactly how this cell-based storage works, check out this tech explainer from sister site ExtremeTech.)

Physical Size Matters: Desktop or Portable Drive?

If you have a large photo or video collection—perhaps you are a photo or video editor, or maybe a movie buff—you’ll likely need several terabytes of space in which to store it. So your best option is a desktop-class drive. We define these as having one or more spinning-platter drives inside and requiring its own dedicated power cable. Of course, in this scenario, your files are going to have to stay at your desk.

Need Redundancy or Extreme Speed? Consider a RAID

If you buy a larger desktop drive with two or more spinning platters, you’ll almost certainly have the ability to configure the drive as a RAID array using the included software. Depending on which RAID level you choose, you can prioritize capacity, speed, or data redundancy, or some combination thereof.

A collection of spinning drives configured with a RAID level designed for faster access can approximate the speeds of an SSD, while you should consider a drive with support for RAID levels 1, 5, or 10 if you’re storing really important data that you can’t afford to lose. Hit the link above for an explanation of the strengths of each RAID level.

Major Considerations before Purchase

There are a number of technical facts that can be considered when deciding on which external hard drive to buy. For the average person, there are basically five major considerations.

1) The Size of the Hard Drive or Hard Drive Capacity

This is the amount of space available for storage on the disk. A rule of thumb is to choose a hard drive about twice as large as the size of your computer’s internal hard drive. This will allow you to always have the available space for two backups of your computer if it needs to be restored. For other purposes such as external storage of working copies, your workload requirements will determine the size. It is always better to have too much external hard disk capacity than not enough because the latter would require you to purchase another hard drive.

2) The Data Transfer Rate

This is a technical number that basically tells you how fast the data will be transferred between the computer and the external hard drive. Slow data transfer rates are not always bad if you are in no hurry to copy or backup your data files. Users who need quick storage and retrieval times need to pay close attention to the data transfer rate.

3) The Type of Cable

The cable used to connect the computer to the external hard drive. Usually, the cable will come in the box with the hard drive. More importantly, check if the cable provided will support the maximum data transfer rate (above) of the device.

4) The Interface Between the Computer and External Hard Drive

This will be a cable, and the cable needs a connector on both ends. Your choice of the connector will directly affect your data transfer rate The main types of connectors are USB, Firewire, Thunderbolt, and eSATA. For most people, USB and Firewire are the most common choices since most computers have connectors already built into the unit. There are two versions of USB, 2.0 and 3.0, with 3.0 having a data transfer rate about twice that of 2.0.

5) Price

This last consideration often ends up being the deal breaker. The external hard drives with the fastest data transfer rates and the greatest disk capacity are almost always the most expensive. Even if you do not have a requirement for terabytes of data storage, you may require the fastest data transfer speed. With the price, there is also the consideration of manufacturer and brand name, as some people are particular about buying from certain manufacturers.

5 Best Water Heaters Consumer Reports 2019 – Top Rated

If your water heater is nearing the end of its useful life and you’re thinking of replacing it before disaster strikes, you’ll be happy to know that you have better choices, thanks to recent federal regulations that require water heaters to be more energy-efficient. New storage tank water heaters are required to operate more efficiently, and tankless (on-demand) water heaters are even more efficient than that.

Typically, homeowners replace their old water heater with one of the same type that runs on the same fuel—natural gas or electricity. Switching from a tank water heater to a tankless unit can be expensive because it requires you to retrofit your plumbing and possibly your electrical system. But if you’re building a new home or adding to an existing one, installing a tankless water heater may make economic sense.

Types of Water Heaters

Depending on how much hot water you use and how you’re heating the water (gas or electric), there are several choices. Some types are claimed to cut energy costs by up to half that of regular storage models. But their added up-front costs mean payback time might be longer.

Tankless (On-Demand) Water Heater

Rather than storing water, tankless water heaters use heating coils to heat the water as you need it. They’re more energy-efficient than a storage tank but provide only a limited flow of hot water per minute—about 3.5 gallons, depending on inlet water temperatures. They’re best for people who typically aren’t drawing water for more than one user at a time—such as running a shower and dishwasher simultaneously.

Storage Tank Water Heater

Storage tanks are the most common type of water heater. As the name suggests, these consist of an insulated tank in which water is heated and stored until needed then emerges from a pipe on top of the water heater. There is also a temperature- and pressure-relief valve, which opens if either exceeds a preset level.

Solar Water Heater

A roof-mounted cell absorbs the sun’s heat and transfers it to an antifreeze-like fluid in a closed-loop system that runs to the water tank. The best deliver stellar savings in summer, making them attractive for warm, sunny regions. But savings suffer on cold and cloudy days. Most models employ a backup system that kicks in when needed.

Condensing Water Heater

Condensing water heaters are an option if you heat with gas and need a unit with a capacity of more than 55 gallons. These models have a tank like a conventional water heater, but they capture exhaust gases that would normally go out the flue, which wastes energy. These gases are blown through a coil in the base of the unit, where incoming cold water can absorb most of the heat.

Heat Pump (Hybrid) Water Heater

These capture heat from the air and transfer it to the water. They use about 60 percent less energy than standard electric water heaters. And while they cost more than electric-only models, installation is similar and payback time is short. But they don’t work well in very cold spaces and need to be placed in an area that stays about 40° F to 90° F.

And because the heat pump is on top, a hybrid water heater needs as much as 7 feet of clearance from floor to ceiling. You’ll also need up to 1,000 cubic feet of uncooled space to capture enough heat from the air as well as a nearby drain to discharge the condensate.

Features to Consider

Warranty: Coverage for water heaters typically runs three to 12 years. While you’ll usually pay a bit more for longer-warranty models, we’ve found that they tend to have larger elements or burners that can speed up water heating and have thicker insulation for less heat loss. Choose a water heater with the longest warranty available.

Anti-scale devices: Some brands advertise features that are supposed to reduce the buildup of mineral scale at the bottom of the tank by swirling the water. While the scale can shorten the life of the heating element, you don’t need to invest in fancy features to get a water heater that lasts. Just look for one with a 12-year warranty, which typically includes a longer or thicker element.

Brass vs. plastic drain valves: These are situated near the base of the water heater for a garden hose that drains the heater. Look for brass drain valves, which are more durable than plastic.

Glass-lined tanks: Designed to reduce corrosion.

Digital displays: Help you monitor levels and customize operation. Some electric/heat pump hybrid water heaters let you set a vacation mode that uses just the heat pump for added efficiency when you’re away. Displays on solar water heaters often show tank and collector temperatures, along with pressure readings and other info.

How We Chose the Best Frying Pans

Universally compatible, medium-sized, oven-safe pans

First, compatibility with all types of stovetops, including induction. Second, the versatility conferred by being oven-safe. Author and “kitchen gadget geek” Liana Green of Liana’s Kitchen likes oven-safe nonstick pans because you can, for example, brown a steak on the stove and put it directly into the oven without having to transfer it into a baking dish.

We also opted to only test 10- and 11-inch pans. This is a good size for cooking two fried eggs or a three-egg omelet, but if you’re interested in more (or less), most of the models we tested come in a range of sizes, typically from 9 inches up to 12.

Nonstick

Want to get a really quick sense of how good your nonstick pan is? Fry an egg on it. If you can successfully fry an egg without the white sticking all over the pan and with the yolk intact, you’ve got a keeper. We heated each of our test pans for two minutes, and then fried eggs on low heat without adding any oil or butter, specifically because we wanted to test the nonstick surface of the pan itself — without any additional lubricants. Same goes with our cornbread. We mixed the batter and spread it into each nonstick pan without any oil or butter. After 15 minutes in a 400-degree oven, we tested to see which could release a wedge leaving the fewest crumbs or crusts behind.

Heat distribution

We did two tests to get a sense of heat distribution. The first was heating two cups of cold water over medium heat to see where those mini bubbles appeared first, and if there were any hot or cold spots as the water grew warmer. We also tested searing 1-inch round eye steaks over medium-high heat to see if any pans cooked hotter, or didn’t release meat as well.

All 10 pans handled the meat well — no sticking, and all achieved about the same rareness after six minutes — but some pans definitely seared the meat more than others. When we double-checked each pan’s temperature with an infrared thermometer, we saw about a 135-degree temperature swing, but nothing that would cut a pan from the running.

Longevity

The true test of a nonstick pan is how it performs in the long term, so we did our best to cram a few years of use into a couple of days by breaking all the nonstick frying pan rules. We banged each pan against a concrete edge to see how easy it was to dent or warp the surface, and scraped metal forks across their surfaces to see if any flaked started flaking off. Then we ran all 10 pans through an industrial-strength dishwasher, including the ones that were “hand wash only.”

Holistic best

For us, the best nonstick cookware felt good to use, passed all our cooking tests, and sported a price point that wouldn’t make us gag. After a day in the test kitchen, we learned not all nonstick pans are created equally. Some are heavier than others; some have handles that dig into your hands or get hot while cooking, and some have surfaces that are more difficult to get clean. Turns out, some aren’t even all that nonstick.

How to Find the Right Frying Pan for Your Kitchen

Avoid nonstick pans with textured cooking surfaces

Some nonstick frying pans come with textured surfaces, such as the Frieling Black Cube Fry Pan and the Circulon Symmetry Hard-Anodized Nonstick French Skillet. It sounds a little like a no-brainer, but we found that the pans with textured surfaces were consistently less nonstick than pans with smooth surfaces — and the experts agree. “A raised pattern on a nonstick pan pretty much negates its nonstick ability,” Braun confirms. “Food tends to grip to the texture, so a smooth-bottomed pan is ideal in this category.”

Pick your ply

Of our top picks and honorable mentions, two pans are tri-ply: the KitchenAid Tri-Ply Stainless Steel Nonstick Skillet and the All-Clad Stainless Nonstick Fry Pan. The All-Clad d5 Stainless Nonstick Fry Pan, the Demeyere 5-Plus Nonstick Fry Pan, and the Swiss Diamond Prestige Clad Nonstick Fry Pan all have five layers — which helps explain why they are typically more expensive than the tri-ply options.
